Article: Hellflush ruining the tunning scene?
Not to mention that hellaflush has NOTHING to do with OEM or aftermarket wheels. It's about that cambered out look, which can be achieved with stock wheels as well.
It might not be safe, but the main complaint here doesn't seem to be safety. The main complaint is that people don't like the look. They think it's dumb and they think it's all about looks and would rather everyone be on wide, meaty track tires.
It would be boring if all our cars were the same or built to the same spec or style. I would much rather see a million cars on the road that I don't like than everyone biting off me.
Hey guys, I've been around the scene since the mid-90s and loving every style thats came up since then, but I am getting tired of the Hellaflush scene only because it attracts so many kids and those who haven't "grown up" yet. I actually haven't owned a Honda since November of 2010 and have since moved on to G35 Sedan and I always pride on being a auto enthusiast and not just a "style enthusiast" or I got more of this or I got a more expensive this then you.
Main thing is that I guess it seems to me that its a scene for kids now these days and I feel I have no place in this so-called Honda scene. And also nothing new coming out anymore like back in the day when the B swaps started to get crazy and then the rare imported parts. Then K series etc etc. Now everytime I go to a show or read a magazine its ALL the same; no matter how many different wheel setups or paint schemes I see, its all the same now.
I like the look but its time to move on guys.

The people who aren't into it for the scene aren't going to come or go with fashions and fads. I agree that the Honda scene is in kind of a weird place right now, but honestly Honda enthusiasts have always demonstrated what I would consider to be pretty poor taste. Mostly that's because Honda's are cheap and mods/personalization is accessible to young people without much disposable income but who want to call attention to themselves.
But I don't care about the scene. I like these cars because they are thoughtfully engineered and reliable, and because they combine high-tech, rev-happy engines with sub-3000 lb. chassis and fully independent suspensions. It's ta recipe for a highly-customizeable car that is fantastic to drive. These facts will never change and they are the reason why my garage will always have room for a mid/late 90s Honda regardless of whatever other cars I eventually own.

Personally, I think there have been much worse trends than hellaflush like the peak of the ricer movement in the late 90's/early 2000's. I mean come on, the scene was rife with gaudy bodykits and ridiculous headlight/tailight conversions. Let us not forget the NOPI nationals and Hot Import Nights/Daze cars shows that filled many of us w/ dread.
People built their cars as though lots of stickers and the color yellow actually gained hp. If anything the trends have gotten better over the last 10+ years. IMHO, the hellaflush style is a FAR cry from the bad old days of Erubuni, Wings West, Black Widow, APC, or anything that contained the word "combat" in it's name.

^AGREED!
If you have left the honda/import scene because of a "trend", then you probably haven't been a part of the seen for very long...or possibly not a true enthusiast of the sport itself. The import scene alone has gone through so many stages, this isn't going to be the last. Also with all trends there are the few that can do it right(yes there is a right) and plenty that will do it very wrong.
To be honest i believe a lot of people left the honda community cause it was stagnate. there wasn't a whole lot of popularity in the scene years back. With the crack down on street racing as well as the abundance of "negative" news towards the import scene it was spiraling down really fast. On top of that the recession going on, can't make money if its not being spent.
People grew up, stopped racing and got out of the scene all together. The drag racing community starting falling flat, tracks we're closing due to lack of events, road racing was still not that popular and drifting started taking over the import scene.
From the beginning, now and the future people will continue to mod there cars in similar fashions as they do now...lowered and rims, wether it be 17/18's on your civic to flushed 15x9's. Along with rims the style of lowering has had different looks from the "flush" to "sunken ship aka slammed" to "hella flush". which are all the evolution of one another.
People need to get over themselves and do what they want already! I've been a fan of all the stages the scene has gone through....but the one scene i currently despise, while everyone is ranting over "hella flush"(which was a non honda thing originally which people forget). I DISLIKE THE SHAVED BAY RACE CAR LOOK! and RACE CAR LOOK all together
How is a fully caged car with a built motor and a SHAVED bay anymore functional? These "track themed" builds are really waste of a car...at least a flushed car gets driven, don't really see a lot of "track themed" builds actually hit the track

iddddkkkk man..... live and let live.. build your car how you want to.. in the end we all get our inspiration from each other. all of our cars have a little bit of someone elses car in it.
that is. we all get bits and pieces of inspiration from people and add your own twist to it... thats the nature of this "scene".. you could just as easily say anything in this "scene" is a fad. just like you could say anything is a lifestyle.
for example.. speed is a fad. b series swaps is a fad. lsv is a fad.. blah blah..
if youre worried about the fad then somethin aint right.
like dude buddy said earlier. respect the blood sweat and tears that is put into a car. all of us spend countless hours and dollars into what somebody else might frown upon and say..you spend that much on that?! wtf
in the end we put together a mixture of different ideas and cues from different people and their cars to build our cars. and all we can do is respect each other and realize that everyone does whatever the **** they want. so again.. just live and let live

as far as this hellaflush deal goes, I personally don't care what people do. Yeah sure people think its "killing the scene" when its really not. Its just like body kits, 20s, Nos, everything that has came and went. Its sparks interest throughout, and actually brings people in. People come into the car scene for different things, Some people do it to make the car look good, or bad...w/e. People build cars for shows, and nothing else. Hellaflush is a show thing....Just like hotrods. People show them off because, well..there becoming rare, and like to make them look good. You dont see a 100% restore thats prestine at the track do you? Others get into the scene to be a go-fast racecar driver. Build a car for a function. go fast...or what have you. Those people like the aspect of making a slow car, turn faster times at the strip, or circuit, in whatever way possible. Or just making a slow *** turd walk out on cars that are apparently fast from factory. Like a boosted crx. there slow....but its always funny to **** on a camaro ss, or gto that some douche bought n tried to make you look dumb.
I personally don't care what people do to there cars, I enjoy everything. hellaflush or not. Its there thing, there car, there style. not mine... Its like hating on people who wear a certian clothing line.... Its what they like. Not what you like. People saying that things are destroying the scene, really guys? People hate on hondas all the time...but what do you say to them? Its my choice, not yours...its your choice what you drive. So, why would you hate on people who make a car theirs. Car modification is all about personalization....not about whats "in". Most people mistake that. Thats whats ruining the scene. Haters... but, hey. There is always someone who has something to say about something. Oh, eff your fake wheels, my RPF1s are legit....yeah so are the 50 other sets running around town. Who cares....Its a car, its mine, **** off. If you don't like it, tough. Don't like seeing it at meets, don't come. Can't stand people being themselves and having a style they like, leave the scene, and go get an F-body. Things wont change because of people bitching. Itll change when people suck it up, and appreciate people being unique. No one likes people copying there style...so let people have there own.
ok... im done. im just ranting now..
hella-flush gets the bitches.

I have to agree with the shaved bay part. The thing I dislike even more though? Wire tucks.
Way to make your car more difficult to work on.
As far as cars not being driven, I think the story of the car might need to be better understood. Do I know people who own highly modified Hondas just to let them sit while they bus around in their girlfriend's car? Sure. But that's only one side of the story of undriven cars.
I have a car that I barely drive. I have shoveled far too much money into it. It's purely hobby to buy parts I want for it and install them. It gets an occasional drive. I put maybe 120 miles on it this summer.
Sounds like I'm just wasting money for no good reason, right? Wrong.
I would be crushed if anything bad happened to that car. It's not just another Civic and I could never replace it. My dad helped me get that car, my second car (to replace the identical, one year old Civic coupe I had before it), before he passed away. My dad was a car nut as well, though he'd been out of any sort of scene for years. My entire life I knew him as a diesel mechanic. I never even got to work on my car with my dad. He taught my sister brakes (she doesn't even currently own a car iirc). She probably needed the help more than I did though.
My build honestly was more about remembering my dad and dealing with his passing.
Basically what I'm saying here is that we're all going to see different aspects of the car modification scene that we don't like and we're all going to see types of modifications and different cars that we don't particularly like. I think a little more understanding is needed, or at the very least perhaps some people could learn to just not give a f*** what other people are doing with their cars. (Not toward you, 1320spTurtle. I know some people need to chill though.)

I definitely hear you man. As for driving cars, i don't mean it literally as a daily driver. But when people build something that looks like a purpose built car, you would think it would eventually hit the streets. One car that particularly comes to mind is the that blue bug eye impreza from first class fitment that doesn't even run.
Everyone has the right to build cars for what ever reason they want. Just think it's stupid that people hate so much on this style,
like the other guy said. If you've been in the seen long enough, you have seen things that are MUCH MUCH worse than this!
Enjoyed reading the opinions! I Live in Las Vegas, NV, the racing scene out here is pretty ridiculous! Most of the kids out here (and i do mean KIDS) are " Honda all day" and "my hondas faster than yours." Its no longer for the love of how a chemical meets air, electricity, and combustion to create an energy that is widely degraded! I love Honda, in fact i love cars in general, but the way honda is portrayed out here makes me SICK!!! I no longer go to the meets because there's always some BS, stupid kids thinking there cool or cops messing with us because of the stupid kids actions. I have left the honda scene and came back because i have realized that in life you dont do things to look good or to fit in, you do them because you want to, and it pleases you. Now on topic of the " Hella-flush " community. I personally dont like all the hype that this style has created. Its now a trend, there is no originality involved in this whatsoever. Im not bashing anyone that likes this style because i LOVE the look, like i said i just dont like the hype its created. My 20 year old four door civic is on deep dish diamond racing wheels 15X10 to be exact. The rear HAS to be cambered simply because the wheel width is 10in, so its not very " Even " with the fenders or " Flush " as they now say. Before it was " I wanna be 10 seconds " and all this BS, but when they say it takes way more than a wing, body kit, turbo, and nitrous to do it, many gave up. So instead of being fast like they wish, they decide to concentrate it on being this so called " Flush ". Like i said i live in LV which has climbed to the 3rd or 4th highest stolen car rate in the country, ALL of these kids are from the highly frowned upon honda community. Every time you get stopped they check every serial number and vin they can get there hands on, and thats just the half of it. ALL this coming from the stupid kids that NEED to be driven away from this love that we all have. In saying that, " Hella-Flush" / Honda scene in general= FAIL!!! I love my honda and will never leave its side, but im in it for myself and myself only. Keep the deep dish, camber, stretched tires, camber wear, and originality to myself, "Hella-Flush" can and should DIE...
Not all import communities are like this, that's why I'm a dsm guy. They have had their rice fad, back in the late 90's. But now it's nothing but lowered cars with wheels, and an performace out the ***. There is no "hellaflush" in the dsm world. Just stock bodies, they are all about performance and that's it.

Of course like others have pointed out, they did have their phase.
And get stolen so often by people who don't know the idea of hard work, so much that its almost not worth owning anymore. When people have to look over their shoulder 2 times just to make sure they aren't followed, it gets to a point where you don't want to be in the scene anymore. I'm almost to that point myself. And I've owned them since the Honda Import community started

I think I heard the car also has to do with his dad though, that they built it partially together and then his dad passed away. So I can relate to that. There were a lot of haters of the vehicle when I was there though, and knowing the story makes me think even less of those people.
In the end though, it's his car. If he wants what is basically a 1:1 scan working model, then that's all up to him. I still don't really get why people get upset about what others do to the cars except for one thing.
Uncommon models or models that are getting harder to find, much less in great condition.
It would be a shame, imo, to see someone take an Infiniti M30 convertible and weld a top onto it (this car was in production for the US only and only for three years, with numbers rumored to be between 5,000 and 12,000 made, with half being convertibles), or to take even a mint condition, 12,000 mile '88 CRX and strip it out, swap it and make it into a track car (what's the point when all you really need is the chassis anyway?).
I saw a Scion TC last week at the local car meet. It was stanced but super clean and neat. The wheels were gorgeous, in fact everything was gorgeous. I noticed it was turboed and thats what made me come over to speak to the guy. He was really cool and we talked for a bit about his car. I asked how much power it made and how quick it was and I was impressed by the figures. I somehow managed to leave at the same time as him, thinking, "cool maybe we'll line up on the highway",... NO! He was going 18mph on the on ramp and slow as f*ck on the highway.. sparks coming off his exhuast on larger dips in the pavement. I almost felt sorry for him, knowing he would never enjoy his car just because he wants to show up people with his stance and flushness. Now IMO that is what the car world is coming to. Who can be the bigger show off, and say they have this and that. But they have a car they cant enjoy nor can it do the things it had the potential for.
How was I quoting a video? And no I'm not mad that in your mind you think that you get girls, and think your "hellaflushness" get's them for you. Not sure what world you live in, but whatever. But I'm not gonna sit here and argue with you because you seem to be quite low on the IQ scale.
And I'm engaged so I could car less about getting girls by being hellaflush
