Alternator issue
A buddy of mine just got a used 2002 si hatch from a used car dealer. He drove it around for 3 days and the car just cut out on him when he was driving. All of his gages dropped while going at a regular speed. the battery light went on alng with the srs and eps lights. I jumped him and got him going again and two minutes later it did the same thing.. he was still able to go tho. the motor was still up to par and he was abe to drive it for short period of time after the gages cut out everytime. I figured it was the alternator so today i got a rebuilt one and put it in. the lights n longer are dim and the car runs fine. the only prblem is is that the battery light is still on. We charged the battery for an hour or so and we know its charging b/c its reading 13.4 volts at idle and 13.9 are 4k.. why would the battery light still be on.. does this just mean the battery could be shot.. it has enough juice to start the car normally.. wat could this issue be? do i need to reset the battery again? or maybe get a new one? or charge longer? id hate to have him get a new battery cuz they are expensive w/o that being the problem... please help
If the battery light is on it usually means that there isn't enough voltage being generated. If the car is running then the alternator should be producing enough voltage for the car to be happy and no battery light should be on. But if the battery is shot then the light will usually come on. I would go to a battery store and have them check your battery, they will usually do it for free. Or if you have a shop you go to have them do it. It's easy and only takes a couple minutes to test. That will tell you how your battery is doing. Running the car like you guys did with it dying and the alternator not working will usually kill a battery fairly quick, especially if it's a walmart special or something compariable.
If the battery is done, then tell your buddy to step up to the Odyssey PC680, bitchin' battery, light weight and can handle abuse. Plus they're guaranteed for up to 5 years! They're $127 shipped off of Ebay. Just search for PC680. Buy from Nine Penguins, they're nice good people.
Good luck, and post up what you guys find out.
The other possibility is that the alternator you bought is shitty out of the box, that can happen. I've seen it quite a few times. Just have you're whole electrical system checked at the shop or battery store. Again they usually test for free, so why not get it all checked?
