Default 99 Si Tranny/Synchro Problem - What to order??

OK, tranny shop says that 3rd gear synchro is definitely shot. However, they want $1200 ($750 labor plus 450 in parts) to replace it with a 9 piece 3-4 sleeve kit. Tranny shop is willing to let me take the tranny to get fixed by someonelse (which is what I will do as I have a friend who will do the work cheaper), and they will put it back in.

Is THIS (Illustration #8 - Sleeve Set (3-4)) what they are talking about?? Am I going to need anything else?? Perhaps a Gearspeed Bearing/Seal rebuild kit $225 shipped listed HERE? Anything else??

Please help as I would like to order the parts tomorrow....

Thanks.

If your synchros are shot, you can order just the synchro set, either 1-5 or 3-4-5. Plus the Gear-Speed 3-4-5 synchros are carbon coated for smoother shifting.

PM GearSpeedEF9 for more info.

Replace the 3/4 hub and sleeve w/ syncro rings. I have the part number at home that you need to get from honda. The brass syncro rings that come with that kit hase carbon material on the contact points of the gears. The rings alone rarely fail. Usually the teeth on the sleeve become rounded and the hub has score marks.

It might be. It really depends on the condition of the parts in your tranny. The only real way to know of course, is to tear apart your tranny. Sorry if my post came off in the wrong way.

Well, the tranny shop didn't really say anything about the actual sleeve being dammaged or what not. They just said the 3rd gear synchro needs replacing and that they were gonna get a 3-4 sleeve kit from Honda. They also mentioned that a couple of synchro's had a little wear, but were not really necessary to replace. However, they said the kit they would be getting had 9 pieces to it. The one from hondaautomotive parts.com (in the link above) has only 7. Personally, I think what they are buying will be the same kit that is being sold online since hondaautomotiveparts.com is basically a Honda dealership, too.

Honestly, I just want to do as little (money-wise) as possible to get the car shifting smooth again, so I can possibly sell it....

I might be wrong, but I think you can only get synchros with the sleeve from Honda. I don't think you can purchase synchros by themselves. If you only need the synchros, PM GearSpeedEF9 on this board and he can help you out. Tell him Reid sent you his way.
