3rd gear grind. Need help please..
Ok, I took my car in to an Econo Lube today to have the transmission fluid changed because It was that time.. The car drove perfectly fine when I took it in. Now tonight everytime I try and shift into 3rd at a speed > 30mph it grinds. No other gears but third. I never drove the car hard tonight either, I am wondering if maybe they didn't put in enough fluid, or used the wrong grade or what?
In the manual honda says to only use their brand of MTF, but it also says you could even use 10w30 oil as a temporary fix. Eitherway it shouldn't grind should it? I'm wondering what I should do? So far I plan to go back to the econo lube to ask them what's up. And
on me for not doing it myself or atleast taking it to the dealer. Btw the car is a 99 ex coupe with 61k miles.

Yeah take it back and see what's what, but it's not uncommon for them to grind a bit w/ new fluid. I'm very particular about running Honda MTF in mine and never get grinds after fluid changes. If you're sure they put in oil, I'd have them put in Honda MTF this time and see if that clears it up.
If you take it back and they won't fix or try to and it still grinds use some gm synchromesh manual transmission fluid #12345349. It has friction modifiers in it that may help.
Thanks for the input guys. and an Update: I went down there this morning and told the guy what's wrong etc. And so far he's being very nice about it.
He called the dealership and asked what to do, he put in honda's recommended "substitute" and the car still grinds. He told me Monday morning he would drive to the honda dealership himself and pick up some Honda MTF and change it out for me for free on Tuesday. But until then 3rd gear still grinds even with hondas recommended substitute.
Could that gear oil they used at first has permanently jacked my tranny?

works better for grinding tranny's, just put it on mine even tough its good and it made a difference over honda mtf. it shifts beautifully
gm synchromesh manual transmission fluid !!
Its the ****! My 3rd gear syncro is trashed. Grinds big time. Put in syncro mesh. Only grinds at really high RPM. It use to grind at 3-4k rpm.
it makes shifting a lot smoother!....

maybe your synchros are bad, mine grinded also so i switched trannies instead of fixing and you should tried different fluids maybe try synchromesh i heard everyones experience is positive.

It smells bad but works awesome! Makes your shifter feel like butter!
Make sure you get the GM Synchromesh, friction modified!

I took my car back today so they could put in Honda MTF (at no charge) They said it would fix it. Of course it didn't. I had the manager drive my car and he swears my clutch fluid needs replaced and I should pay 49.99 for it.. I'll do that myself.. but anyway. Would the clutch fluid be able to make ONLY 3rd gear grind? Or is it the 3rd gear syncro like everyone has said. I beleive it is the syncro, but recently I have noticed my clutch feeling much much softer. But then again, if It grinds at a high rpm 2 to 3 shift shouldn't it grind at a high rpm 1 to 2 shift if it's the clutch?
So what do I do now? Do I blame them for braking my tranny? Could the gear oil they put in have done it or is it just coincidence. He's assuming I race my car around town because I drove a honda.. So he thinks it's been thoroughly abused and won't believe what I say.

I think this GM syncromesh might be the savior for these b16 cable trannies wehre 3rd gear goes to **** frequently. I'll be using that on my next change and see if my 3rd gear 3-4g rpm grind goes way...

Are there any negative opinoins on GM Synchromesh MTF? A friend was saying its too thick if it can fix a grind and the thicker oil may lead to bearing or differential failure. Is this true?
