Where is the vtec solenoid located and what does it look like. Pictures would be very good.
And, can any harm come from unplugging it and going for a quick run. I figure it's the easiest way to determine if my vtec is engageing or not.

I know it will throw a code, but will it do any physical harm to the car, other than obviously not engaging vtec. And will everything go back to normal once I plug it back in.
Also, you didn't tell me where to find the solenoid.

nope, no harm it just won't switch over.
Everything will go back to normal once you clear the code by unplugging the ecu fuse in the engine bay for 10 full seconds.
I am not sure what the solenoid is even though I have a torn down engine on my padio........
EDIT: I believe it is on the back of the head and I don't remember where.....

the VTEC solonoid is on the transmission side of the cylinder head, it is located right next to the distributor the distributor is to the left of the itake cam and the VTEC solonoid is to the left of the exhaust cam.

its located right in front of the distributor:
you can run with it unplugged but you'll be running in limpdick mode and your engine won't make anymore power than the primary camshaft lobes will allow, depending on what camshafts you are running.
Also, you'll have an early redline since the enging will be in limpdick mode too. about 7500rpm I believe ...

Thanks for the pic, now I at least know what i'm looking for.
In the meantime i've been randomly unplugging ****. First thing I unplugged threw a code but apparently made absolutely no difference in the way the car drove. The second thing I unplugged was near the injectors. It didn't throw a code and made no difference in the way the car drove. oh well.
