Steering rack true center / alignment question
Hey guys, so I has a problem.
- I replaced a bunch of suspension parts and now need an alignment. Steering wheel off center now, and I'm not confident it's at true rack center anyway (previous owner messed with it).
- My Del Sol is missing the clockspring in the steering wheel, and I have an external horn hooked up so clockspring ribbon snapping won't be an issue.
- Knowing this, can I center the steering rack by doing the turn-both-ways and divide-by-two method, then unbolt the steering wheel and put it back to center?
- Or does the steering column also have a true "center" that the steering wheel needs to be at, forcing me to recenter at the U Joint?
Let me know if this doesn't make sense lol

Re: Steering rack true center / alignment question
The steering rack and column are matched by the rack and pinion gears, so there's no different "true center" than the middle of the rack
So measure the ends of the rack and find center. Then take your steering wheel off and it should find a spline so the wheel is pointed straight.
But don't include the tie rod ends. This is probably what you're confused about. Now that the rack and wheel I centered you adjust the rod ends so the wheels are symmetrical to the chassis.
