Spring compressor or....
I don't have a spring compressor, but I need my OEM top hats for my Koni/springs install. So I have 2 questions...
1. Is there anything I can use to get the top hats off safely without a spring compressor?
2. How compressed is the stock suspension on a GS-R, and would it be seriously dangerous to just unscrew the top hats?

I didn't remove the springs from the front of my GSR, because I purchased the GC extended upper mounts.
However, the rear springs are so lightly preloaded (and softer rates than up front), I had no issues just wrapping a towel around the top, standing on it (both towel and shock body) and removing the screw. The towel was to catch the upper mount when it shot off the end. For the fronts, you can probably do the same, just be much more careful, as they are more preloaded than the rears.

Rent one.
Some local auto parts stores will rent out spring compressors. Just make sure you choose one that will fit your springs; some larger compressors won't fit Honda springs.

It can be very dangerous if you're not careful and/or don't know what you're doing.

I ended up renting one from Advance Auto Parts for free.
You basically just buy a used one for $50 and get a full refund if you return it within 30 days.
