OK guys and girls, what do you do? I have a Spoon steering wheel and want to put it on but I am concerned about my insurance w/ Geico. Currently I have airbags on both sides of the car. What have you all done re: this issue? Do you tell them, not tell them and hope you're not involved in an accident, etc? My ride is a daily driver, and I am not loaded w/ money to cover such a disaster. Any and all suggestions are appreciated. Thanks
I suggest ditching the steering wheel in favour of an airbag-equipped aftermarket one. I'm not sure but I think you can get a JDM ITR one or Mugen one thta has an airbag.
Insurance should be the least of your worries. I would not want to drive a car with no airbag if I had the choice.

I love my airbag even though I've never actaully had to use it, *knoncks on wood*. Get rid of that Spoon and buy a JDM SRS ITR wheel if you want to change yours. I value safety over the look or feel of any other wheel .

I would like to get a CTR wheel, and am currently looking...thanks.
But I know that there are some of you out there that have changed to a non SRS wheel, what did you tell your ins. com.?

You can tell your insurance company anything you want if you want to get a lower rate. HOWEVER, if you ever make a serious claim and they discover that you lied, they can deny coverage because of your bad faith.
Very bad idea - and you are probably saving yourself no more than $100-$200 per year.

I don't want to lie to get a lower rate, I just want to take out a safety device and need to know if there is an acceptable reason for doing this that they will accept.

I would bet that this is very insurance company dependant. Perhaps you should call them (not telling them that you care an existing customer) and ask them. Would be interesting to see what they say.

Yeah it is, I had a JDM ITR SRS equipped wheel that was sold to me as a CTR wheel, oh it was beautiful and felt so right, but it wouldn't fit on my Si, so I sold it.
Then I get a Spoon wheel from my girlfriend for Christmas and I really like it a lot, but then I start to wonder about screwing myself over a technicality. I'll let you know what they say.

I've heard of someone getting a note from a doctor saying that they were too short and sat too close to the wheel for the airbag to be safe. I don't know if this will help you but it might be something to look into. You could at least lead with that argument when you speak to your insurance. Just try not to use the "stock wheel doesn't look cool" argument.
Call your insurnace company and ask if you don't want to hear something you don't want to hear when something bad happen.
My insurance says is my choice while my friend's insurance company is very very adamant that if he removes the airbag, he and his passengers will not be insured if they are injuired in an accident.

Well I just called them and for those of you with GEICO, you will only lose the discount for the airbag, in my case $86.oo per 6 mos. But you must notify them and send documentation so that they know you removed it. Other than that, coverage is not affected.
what about STATE LAWS? i thought it ws illegal to remove an airbag, bumper, you know safety items,etc..
plus doesnt an jdm itr srs steering wheel cost mucho dinero? ive heard some people talk about swappingover the HONDA INSIGHT steering wheel, any price or info on that?

wtf dood, dont tell your insurance co. anything more than they need to know. The only time i can see an aftermarket non Airbag wheel affect your insurance, is IF you got into an accedent, and god forbid become injured.. and seek compensation for that injury. If they find out you took out your airbag, they have reason to deny your claim.
If you plan to run an aftermarket wheel with no airbag... maybe you should look into getting some 4/5/6 point harnesseseseseses (
) .. and maybe a roll bar to use those Harneseseseses Safely and properly
With properly installed and used 4/5/6 point belts, theres no way your head is comming anywhere close to the steering wheel/dash.
