Airbags aren't exactly the silver bullet everyone seems to think they are. Depending on exactly what happens during an accident they can save your life, or reduce your chances of injury. However they can also make things worse. It really depends on the accident. If you sit extremely close to the steering wheel you have a pretty decent chance of being injured by the airbag in the event it deploys.

Yeah, I've always thought it was dumb too. The only car I'd put a non-SRS wheel in would be one that didn't have one to begin with, or a dedicated track car.
Sure, airbags aren't a silver bullet, but 20 years of statistics do show that you have better chances with one that without. You could say the same thing about seatbelts... my grandpa once survived an accident by NOT wearing his seatbelt, but that doesn't mean they don't save lives.

Re: why would you upgrade to a steering wheel with no airbag??
Here are some stats from 2007 for you:
Since 1990, 168 deaths reportedly have been caused by airbags inflating in low severity crashes. These deaths include 63 drivers, 6 adult passengers (belted 98- and 64-year-old females, an unbelted 57-year-old male and unbelted 88-, 79- and 66-year-old females), 81 children between the ages of 1 and 11, and 18 infants.
Of the 81 children killed by passenger airbags, 64 are believed to have been unbelted, 2 were in forward-facing child restraints that weren’t properly secured, 8 are believed to have been using lap belts only and 4 were thought to be using lap/shoulder belts.
Of the 63 drivers killed by airbags, 41 are believed to have been unbelted, 21 are believed to have been using lap/shoulder belts.
More than 6,018 people are alive today because of their airbags (4,750 a year ago), according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Given the above stats, I'll take my chances and keep my airbag, thanks.
Some people remove airbag wheels because they want a steering wheel that's easy to grip for racing. A lot of people do it because they just want a cool looking wheel and stock airbag wheels usually look terrible. Still more people drop the $$ for a JDM ITR/CTR wheel with airbags but don't bother to hook them up because it's a PITA.
I kept my stock wheel in my car until I finally found a JDM ITR wheel w/airbag and hooked it up properly.

Re: why would you upgrade to a steering wheel with no airbag??
kindof ironically just today i removed my stock steering wheel + airbag for an aftermarket steering wheel with no airbag. why, you may ask? i have confidence in the seat belt. aside from that, it looks better (i didnt get anything with chrome on it) plus, it was very inexpensive. i could probably sell the stock steering wheel on ebay and make my money back and thensome. i for one do sit relatively close to the steering wheel because i feel more in control of the entire car. i dont slouch back to where i can see out the backseat window like a puerto rican. and on the other hand i dont sit too close to where if i did get into an accident my face slams into the steering wheel.

Well one thing that surprised me is that they are inflated using a small explosive.
I always figured they used compressed air since you would think the last thing you want in a accident is for an explosive to go off.but I was watching how it's made and they said the gas created from the explosive is what quickly and reliably inflates it when needed.

Re: why would you upgrade to a steering wheel with no airbag??
well if you wanna b really safe just get a 4 point harness and a racing bucket seat, like JIC, F1 style, Sparco Evo etc etc,

Re: why would you upgrade to a steering wheel with no airbag??
and also if you have the complete system you should be fine. im talking about steering wheel, bucket seats, 4 point harnesses, harness bar, and roll cage you will be perfectly fine. the belts will keep you secured to the seat you wont go anywhere

Dont forget a helmet so you dont bash your head on the cage . Unless your on a track wearing proper saftey equipment it is stupid for removing something that could save your life in everyday driving situations.

Re: why would you upgrade to a steering wheel with no airbag??
Do you really have to ask that? Use your brain.
Thank you.
Perfect example is a friend of mine, shes short..as in 4'11" short. She drives a Honda Odyssey and is right up on the damn steering wheel. She told me one time "If I am ever in an accident, I am afraid that airbag is gonna mess me up really bad". She had to sit so close or else she couldn't reach the pedals.
I have been in two accidents without airbags. One of them I was in a truck and hit a concrete wall at 35-40mph, that hurt. I really think an airbag would have helped as I smacked my head on the windshield hard as hell and took the steering wheel to my chest. The other I was driving a Van and had a damn Soccer mom pull out in front of me and I hit her at 50mph. It had an airbag but it failed to deploy. Luckily I didn't hit the steering wheel or windshield that time. I think most of the time there a good thing, for short people like my friend that has to sit so close to the wheel, a hard impact isn't going to be good either with or without and airbag..or.."bomb bag" as I like to call them. With that said, I still have my OEM airbag steering wheel in my EJ1

Isn't there a law that prohibits the removal of airbags from cars that come equippped with them? I say keep the airbag.
