Can someone explain this to me? My first guess is that short gears are good for the motor, since it is more free to rev. ?

 

gears have no effect on the motor unless you put it in fifth and try to drive from there........the thing that is harmful to engines is constantly high rpms....i.e. staying above 3500 rpm all the time.

 

Unless it's built to take it, like my b16. I have no choice but to constantly rev it, and I'm getting a lot of miles out of it (not after today's events, though). Still, he's right, it would probably last longer if it was revving less.

 

Well, under normal driving, the engine never gets to really breathe, right?..hmm
