In this test we Coated the piston skirts, rod and main bearings and broke in an engine before the abuse. We then drained all the oil and drove the engine for 100 miles without any oil to see what happened. No spun bearings, no piston slap and very little rod knock when this engine was disassembled.



As you can see all our the bearings were in VERY good condition to be run without oil because the dry-film lubricant is a solid film lubricant the bearings were barely scared because the bearings still had lubrication after the oil was all drained. The darker areas are the remains of the dry-film lubricant that goes below the surface of the metal during our curing process. We expected after this abuse that all of the
dry-film would be burned off but as you can see for yourselves this greatly reduces engine failure during
"unexpected" situations.



The pistons skirts were coated with our dry-film lubricant as well and you can see that the piston and walls defiantly did not like the friction from lack of oil. Normally there would be considerable piston slap and the sides of the pistons would be scared and in some places melted. The dry film added a layer of protection and the surface was completely smooth, not to mention the cylinder walls were not gouged or rough at all. No hone is going to be used there is still very visible cross-hatch.



The last thing to look at is the rod journals that were uncoated for this test to see what evidence of friction there would be. As you can see all the journals were in great shape, some need to be repolished but for the most part there is very little scaring from friction.

Under situations with high boost or compression, a loss of oil pressure at high rpm's can lead to enough friction the bearings can be spun before the engine can even be shut off. We originaly though that we would have piston slap immediatly and then rod knock before we hit even 50 miles, this test really showed us how the diffusion (coating being absorbed into the metal at a molecular level with our curing at moderate temperature) could allow the bearings to refuse friction and operate under extreme conditions.

 

big to you guys for doing this kind of testing, and obviously at your own expense!!!

is this stuff intended for use w/ oil? as an added lubricant/protection? is there any depth to it? (will it throw off tolerances if not acounted for?) has it been tested w/ oil? for long periods of time?

Wow, I'm very impressed! I'd never think the poor engine would last longer than a few seconds without oil; coated or not.

What is your explanation for the fact that each and every ring showed absolutely no heat build up or friction wear? It makes no sense that...to quote you...

It is the heat and friction of the rings against the wall that creates the wear problem...not the skirt, coated or not.

So what were you hoping to accomplish with this test? What did you guess would happen? What really happened?

I'm really understanding the point to this thread. It's all good that you went out and did this test but what does it prove? That your coatings will help in case of sudden oil loss?

How were the 100 miles driven? Did you just put around town? Highway driving at high speeds (65-75mph)? Was this motor boosted? Was it freshly rebuilt with all new internals before you coated and installed all your parts?

I think you need to go into a little more depth here...
