I ordered summit racing battery box and concluded it was a POS. So I made my own. Opinions on this please. Do you think it will stay still in a front end collision? It's made out of
1/4" angle steel and 1/4" flat steel. Welded together with oxy/acetylene torch and lincoln welding sticks.

Painted it flat black.

Installed in trunk.

Finished product.

 

Its decent but if you ever go to a track you will not pass inspection.

 

Looks like a simple, cheaply made design but what about venting battery gases? I have a Moroso box with a tube venting it out of the bottom of the car.

 

Why would it not pass?

And it looks like a gelpack battery to me... no gasses...no holes.

 

Because the box has to be made of steel and have vent tubes, plus I highly doubt he installed a kill switch out side of the vehicle.

He did make it out of steel.

Why does it need vent tubes if it's a sealed battery?

 

sorry to inform you guys, but a gel cell battery does not need a vent tube to be legal for track use. there is no liquid to explode or leak gasses. OPTIMA batteries kick ***

The box is made of steel. It would be simple to seal the box, add a vent tube, and upgrade to 5/8" bolts. I didn't install a kill switch outside. I'll figure that out later. I thought optimas were sealed batteries that didn't need to be vented. At the track does every battery need to be in a sealed box?

BTW this is my first welding project. I think it turned out ok. It gets the job done

Have you read the nhra rule book, if your track is strict like the ones over here then no you will not pass. Here is what it says in the rule book

Battery may be located in a sealed .024 inch steel, .032 inch aluminum or NHRA approved box. Box may not be used to secure battery and must be vented outside. Relocated battery must be fastened to the frame.

And even though there is no liquid inside a gel cell battery, it can still explode and get pretty nasty inside the cabin. Here is the rule book, take a peak. I'm not trying to ruin on battery box, I'm just trying to help you in the long run.

I guess you won't be racing with that box even if it were sealed.
NHRA approved ruins it for you.

Thanks for the link. Don't they mean .24" steel b/c .024" is VERY thin. If i make another one i'll need to fab up two new pieces. Something to fasten the relocated battery to the frame and a cover that will also be fastened to the frame, sealed and vented. Will this work or should i just order a NHRA approved box?

 

Your welcome, basically make a box out of steel with vent tubes, Then make a bracket that fits over the top of the battery, drill 2 holes. Get some j hooks and attach the battery to the frame. Here is a good pic

 

dont put it in the trunk, keep that weight on the front wheels

 

Never seen a battery done up like that in a 4th gen; how relocation is needed in order to put the battery right there?

 

Tracks around here dont really care all that much about your daily driver. Weather its vented or not, weather you have a kill switch.. Etc.

you need a integra or a 99-00 civic si battery, you need to move the charcoal canister or take it out!

and it looks like you must also remove your a/c lines

 

yeah, most people that have a b16a in a crx, got rid of there ac along time ago
