I have a set of wide scrapers at work from Cornwell, designed for that, so I am guessing that a putty knife would work as well, it gives you a wider surface, to spread out the "force" so one, you dont gouge the metal as easily, and two, you can really get under there, and pry alot at once

there's a gasket remover spray that works pretty well. just let it soak in for a few minutes and it scrapes off really easy. you can prolly get it at any auto store.
