i don't need help with the actual compression test, i know how to do that...

my question is, my gsr's timing belt tensioner failed causing the belt to become loose. the car can still start and run at very low rpms with the belt hitting the valve cover.

i'm doing a compression test to see if i bent some valves.....question is, can you do a compression test on a motor with the timing beit on by a hair? will it read accurate results? or should i go and replace the tensioner and belt, then do the test?

i really need to do the test before, that way i can replace the valvetrain while the belt is off.

 

As long as the valves will close at the correct time, the result will be accurate.

What I'm worried about is you say the belt is on by a hair? I'd be afraid of it snapping during the test and you bending some valves

 

you way want to consider a leakdown test instead

Id suggest replacing the belt first, just to be safe..then go from there

 

ok well i did the test...

they are consistent, so i'm happy. i don't think i broke/bent anything. think a new toda timing belt and new tensioner should solve my problems.

How so? A leakdown would be less risky since he's turning the engine manually to lign it up to tdc...and it would reveal allot more info about the engine.

 

the car is at acura to see if they will cover it under warranty.
