Default e-brake light problem

i drive a 2001 gs-r and i've recently had a problem with the e-brake light in the console. everytime i start my car up, even after i've released the emergency brake, the light remains on. even after examining the brakes, it doesn't appear to be engaged at all and there hasn't been any apparent rotor or pad damage on the rear brakes. after a couple miles of driving, the light just turns off. this problem only seems to occur when it's cold. any ideas? this is my first time posting here so any suggestions would be helpful.

take off your armrest.

there is a switch hooked up to a green wire under there.

unplug it, do you see the brake light turn off?

if it does, your switch is bad.

or leave it unplugged so the light will never turn back on.

Change your brake fluid.

Replacing brake fluid.

I hope this is the problem.

My 00 GSr does this too. Especially in cold weather.

If I unplug the armrest switch the light still comes on. The reservoir is also full.

then is the float on your Master Cylinder Resevoir working?

I would check the connectors (the ones in the two black connectors) to see if they have any corrosion on them, if so clean them off and put some di-electric grease on it.

go up to the resevoir and pull the connector off the cap and your problem will dissapear. This kept happening to me. Although this is not the best fix, it works. My car is USDM, but I dont see why it wouldnt work for a JDM car as well... correct me if im wrong.

Same thing happenes here, But it went away after i replaced the brakes. But i dont think that was why it was on cause the brakes still had alot of meat on them. I think its just a factory flaw. Cause my brake fluid was full aswell. Seems to only happen with the 2000 and 2001 models

Default Doesn't ONLY happen to '00-'01 models

I have a 94 LS and my brake light stays on sometimes too.

It usually only happens to me when the stupid AEM caliper bracket screws come loose and I have to take everything apart to retighten them in a hurry.

I always forget to release the ebrake before I try to disconnect the ebrake lines.

I second all of the advice posted here unless you have recently changed your rotors or something in which you had to disconnect your ebrake lines. In that case get down there and check them. Unfortunately when your disconnecting the ebrake lines you HAVE to release the ebrake even if you're on jack stands. It's dangerous but necessary.

This is all info from my personal experience but I am in no way an expert.

I have a 99 and this happens to me too. Only when i dont drive the car for a day then go to drive it the next day or when it's cold. It's an on and off thing for me though. I would also suggest changing the brake fluid.

This is a pretty common problem.......try searching the archives for some suggestions (most are really simple). More than likely, it is nothting, but better safe than sorry.

I had the same problem but only on colder mornings. I found that if you slap the top of the master cylinder it turns off. I also have changed my brake fluid since then and no more problem. Dont need to remove your armrest.

I took off the filter, for a test, and the light doesn't come on anymore.
