California Swap/Aftermarket Law Answers!!!
I've been doing a lot of online homework about doing swaps in California. There is much debate out there on what is legal and what isn't. This is the real answers to everyone's questions regarding swaps and bolt-ons. I found out Japanese engines from Japan can be legal if you follow a few guidelines and you also need to re-vin your car after a swap to be 100% legal. I hope this helps. http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/replace.htm

Engine changes are legal as long as the following requirements are met to ensure that the change does not increase pollution from the vehicle:
The engine must be the same year or newer than the vehicle.
The engine must be from the same type of vehicle (passenger car, light-duty truck, heavy- duty truck, etc.) based on gross vehicle weight.
If the vehicle is a California certified vehicle then the engine must also be a California certified engine.
All emissions control equipment must remain on the installed engine.

Stupid question...but a prelude and civic would be the same type of vehicle? I wouldn't want them to pull something outta their *** and say that they aren't.

hey thats pretty cool info..
...just called BAR...the guy i talked to said my (JDM b18c 1995) motor should be ok as long as i have my smog stuff hooked up and it passes with the right emissions...
just wondering has anyone tried to ref a JDM honda motor(other than ZC) and have been denied cuz it was JDM...and only because of that...?
Just kinda worrying about the whole CA certified car deal...
