5w-30 or 10w-30 for a 142k
Hey guys I noticed my car may burn a lil more oil than usual and i may have to add a quart, but i'm also changing the VC gasket and tube seals so maybe the leak may stop cause i dont see anything on the ground. A buddy of mine i work with said i should switch to 10w-30, i currently have 5w-30, what would be better for me to use. its an 95 LS with a 142k and its almost ready for the next oil change. Also whats the difference between the 2?
I know in my 91 jetta with 177k i was putting 20w-50. But thats a totally different car.

So he doesn't use the correct oil for the car if the car isn't specified to use 10w30?
I run 10w30 in the summer, 5w30 in the winter... I might start just running 5w30 all the time, though.
If you're ever in an area where the weather goes down below 20 deg. F you're not supposed to use 10w30, but rather 5w30. The owners' manual recommends 5w30 for all temps, or it says you can use 10w30 if it never goes below 20.

yeah 10w-30 will be fine
like patrickgsr stated above, the factory reccomends 5w-30, but most people will tell you on these tegs after 100K miles to go with the 10w-30. I've been using the new high mileage motor oil made by pennzoil in a 10w-30 weight.
If you are buring oil, go with the 10w-30, but if you aren't (you said you are addressing this), go with the 5w-30.

Ya know, I really can't remember why I've been using 10w30 in the summertime. I use 5w30 in the winter and don't have any oil burning or leaking problems, 176k on my engine right now.

yeah well I work at jiffy lube and patrickgsr94 put it best. there really is not much of a difference between the two. Just go by what manufacturer recommends and stick with it. No matter how hi the mileage. If you have leaks or if the car burns is the only case when you could up the viscosity. I would recommend the hi mileage oil after 75k and stay with either 5w-30 or 10w-30. Also at my work the most commonly used oil is. 10w-30. that is what I will use for my ls when it gets running.
Oh and another quick note. The higher the viscosity the harder your engine has to work. And 10w-40 is crap. Just stuff i know from work. I hope this helps.

why not 20w50 oil? I live where it's HOT and I don't know about anybody else, but when I used 5w30, it'd become basically like water after about 1000 miles. I switched to 10w30 and it'd last to about 2000 miles before it too became like water. Before the rebuild, I went to a 20w50 racing oil (no detergents, i believe), and it was still thick and oily when it was time to change the oil. FWIW, I'm using valvoline 10w30 now, due for an oil change soon.
