Default name that noise*

going about 80 today.. then i started to hear a chattering out of no where.. like something internal was hitting metal on metal. now i have to baby the car and switch gears at about 3k rpms so i dont hear that noise.

the car had barely any oil when i looked at the dipstick too.

what do you guys think that noise is?

Heat shield and you need more oil.

Yeah, check your cat's heat shield.

And did you look at the dipstick while the engine was fairly cold? If you didn't, you need to, as the reading while the engine is hot is pretty skewed.

100% untrue. The reading will be interesting if you check it while the car's running, but, hot or cold, you'll get within 1mm the same reading on the dipstick as long as you check the level with the car off. Hot oil falls down to the pan faster, cool oil is already sitting there, savvy?

Oh no kidding? Damn.

Learn something new every day I guess

I've checked the oil when the car was hot and it read significantly lower than when it was cold. *shrug* Just my experience.
