Default Vortech Type R Problems help

98 type r
mods are
rc 310 injectors
vortech FMU
aem Fuel pressure Regulator
vafc2 controller
3inch Thermal exhaust
test pipe
jdm 4-1 header
msd 6al BTM

also the fan in the supercharger turns a little bit. is that a problem or is it supposed to do it?

i have no fuel pump
no air filter
no oil cooler air cooler.
i have the power cooler and a dump tube going to the oil pan
as soon as vtec engages it backfires and shoots a flame out. i can only do about 30% throttle without it bogging out and backfiring.

what could be the problem with the car?

Did you ever have it tuned by a pro?

doesnt your car have an oil cooler stock? I'd also get an air filter asap. I wouldn't even drive w/o one. Mess around with your vafc settings I guess, but you should take it to a pro, because that is otherwise a recipe for disaster.

put a filter on that, also your timing must be screwed up and you are probably running lean. i would get a fuel pump as well 255lph and prolly ditch the 310s and go with 440 saturated injectors. Also Hondata or AEM EMS to have that setup running right. Sounds to me like you having major issues, and it takes no genious to figure out your running lean. It wont be to much longer if u keep driving it this way that youll damage your motor.

I would revisit your "tuner" or find a new one to start.

What the Hell is "Tuned, but not Dyno tuned"?

What did you use a tuning fork?

Explain please...

It actually sounds to me like a rich condition. All of that unburned fuel passing through to the exhaust and igniting. I'll agree that it's in major need of some professional tuning though.

If you are running a 1:12 FMU and 310 cc injectors and less than 10Psig boost, it's probably rich. Sounds like the ECU is pulling timing (therefore igniting an already rich mixture in the exhaust manifold)...BTW FMU is not considered tuning....you need Hondata, or AEM

Have it tuned by a professional, preferably one who has access to a dyno with a wideband O2.

1. you're supposed to run inline fuel pump with fmu
2. fmu is not top of the line.. standalone will do a better job, that and adding a intank fuel pump
3. don't beat on the car until you come up with solution for this problem
4. did your tuner use wideband? it could very well be runing lean without enough fuel.
5. i'm sure you're planning to add a filter, i'd suggest to do that asap before damaging stuff.
6. stock ignition will do just fine for supercharger hp, you can get some money back by selling msd

1. i got a walbro 255hp pump. which was faulty so im waiting on the new one to come
2. fmu came with the kit. i have a vafc2 that i am also using with the kit.
3. i have only done 35% throttle on the car so far. but car is in shop again.
4. no wideband yet. until i get everythign installed on it
5. buying a hks mushroom filter. only one that will fit due to the abs on a type r.
6. i dont need a btm on the car?

i'm running 260whp and no problems (turbocharged).. i still plan to use stock ignitionafter i up the hp to 325whp (ignition is all stock but not the spark plugs).. i'm also running hondata with 550's injectors, f.p.r., intank 255 pump, its tuned with wideband through entire powerband.. the more hp you run, the easier its to blow the motor.. you may do fine with vafc, but make sure its tuned well.. if tuned well, you shouldn't have problems you have right now. wideband only needed to tune the car.

i have a CEL but dont know what code yet cuz its in the shop. says i dont have enough back pressure due to 3in exhaust and a test pipe. so i have to either modify my stock cat or get a carsound cat. i got the oil leak fixed. still have to get a dyno tune on the car. and the fuel pressure set right and the fuel pump installed.
