Default EGT advice needed.

I think that I'll be looking for an Exhaust G*** Temperature Gauge in the near future, and I would like to know of a high quality unit that wont necessarily break the bank.
It's nice to see what the A/F ratio is, but I have now realized why someone once said that an EGT is far more important than the A/F meter.

[EDIT]Forgot that we had a boosted section, I'll post this there also.[/EDIT]

The autometer series of EGT gauges is pretty affordable. Kind of hard to use those on a header equiped car, unless you mount it downstream in the collector. By then gases have cooled some what and you are still unsure of which cylinder is running lean.
To me, the best setup would be one gauge and sensor for each primary. This way would help you get to the bottom of problems quickly, and be expensive too.
Not sure if that was any help...

Yeap. EGT isnt nearly as helpful for us as it is for the turbo guys.

Ideally you want one in each primary within a couple of inches from the
port. If you dont want to go for four probes, then go with #3 but
there are much better things to spend money on.

What else would you suggest? I'm the one tuning the car. and I'm trying to get the part throttle/cruising/full throttle maps correct...they're great now, but I still have some holes, and I'm just trying to make it safe...any help that you have would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Austin

I believe the EGT probe must be placed 1/2 the distance of your primary's diameter away from the flange side of the exhaust port in order for it to be taking a proper reading for tuning purposes.

As sgT stated this is a forced induction tuning aid or tool and is not as precise as air fuel ratio for all motor setups.

Has anyone tried the Blitz wideband O2 sensor or Greddy wideband O2 sensor? There used to be a website that showed you how to build your own wideband for like $200 but you can't access it diy_efi.com or something like that. Considering the real NTK/Uego or Motec or Bosch widebands are over $1000, this would be the route to go.

cheers

on the contrary, I tend to disagree ... I use it all the time in an all motor setup and its much more precise than a standard a/f meter. It is not only used as a tuning aid but also as safeguard. A high compression motor can ping and explode at high rpm just the same as a charged motor. With just using the egt as a standard at the track, I got the times down from 13.06 to 12.71 and traps up by 3MPH as an example.

If you have a wideband in your car all the time, then I agree that it is better than the EGT.

Also of note, I've asked John Grudynski to do with my header, place the probe on the #3 primary as that cylinder runs hotter than the other 3 ... you all prolly know why it runs hotter.

b/c 4 and 2 fire right before it and it doesn't get a chance to cool before it fires? (pistons on either side firing before it goes off)

There are good archived discussions/tips on the Endyn board about EGT sensor placement.

From sgt:
wide band lambda meter
I know...for someone like me a wide band is way out of my price range...now if I owned a shop, or was a tuner, it would be one of the first purchases.

From Michael Delaney:

I have a GReddy A/F meter installed at the moment...it was installed <6" down system of the Primary O2 sensor...but it is on John's header which is 8.5" longer than the stock header. I'm planning on calibrating it versus a wideband lambda sensor when I'm next at the dyno, I'll remove the stock sensor and place the wideband there.
I have spoken with John, and he agreed that it would be a good idea to install an EGT, and I will be shipping the header back down to him so that I can have him tap and weld the bung on for me, as most welders in my area are idiots, and it will be cheaper overall to send it down to him.

Already been there and read it before I posted here...just looking for the actual product.
Thank you though.
