Default Code 43 Fuel supply system BAD GAS MILEAGE-WHITE SMOKE

code 43
car: 95 GSR, 450 miles on newly rebuilt GSR motor
symptoms: bad gas mileage (140 a full tank--driving VERY conservative as i am currently breaking in a newly rebuilt motor), white smoke vapors from stock exhaust (often while driving or sometimes in the morning)

The motor only has 450 miles on it since the rebuild and I was wondering if that has something to do with the white smoke vapors coming from the exhaust (stock exhaust). The motor is in need of a valve adjustment as well.

White vapors does not smell "sweet", it REEKS of fuel. Some oil is leaking near or around the headgasket but NOT MUCH. Changed the oil and it seemed odd that with only 300 miles the oil is turned a little dark already. I'm not sure the expression of "milky oil" but the oil definitely doesnt look "bronze" color new.

I'm not sure if its normal when you're breaking in a motor to have some of these symptoms--minus code 43.

I've read that i should check the fuel filter & o2 sensor for the code 43. Is that what's causing my bad gas mileage? Suggestions? TIA.

honda's diagnostic trouble shoot for a code 43 is checking the o2 and harness. has nothing to do w/ the fuel filter. bad gas mileage/poor drive ability would come from a bad o2 and a code 43. as for the white smoke, you're running a bit lean. milky coolant is just that, it turns out a light brownish color and is opaque, not translucent.

I just found out that I am overdue for a new fuel filter & o2 sensor because the prev. owner told me he hasn't changed it since he bought the car in 2002.

I will buy a new fuel filter & o2 and see if this helps. As for the coolant, I suppose the headgasket isn't holding as well as it should. Any other suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Bump before work.

i bought a timing light to advance the timing on the dist today. found out it was running at 5 tdc, i re-calibrated to oem specs tdc. i hope this will fix the bad gas mileage problem...any other suggestions?

oh, i also reset my ECU and the code hasn't come up since. the only time the code flashed was when i was on the freeway 5-10 minutes into driving but ever since reset, it hasnt showed its ugly face.

just got the car smogged and it failed. Gross polluter--its running lean and i bet its the o2 sensor. HC & CO levels are sky high but NO is way below.

The car currently has 450 on the odo, do you think its too soon for a smog test? or do you think its an o2 sensor problem? the car also has knock at 15mph but there is no CEL for it.

i've cleared the CEL 43 and it hasnt come up since but it still might be the problem. i also re-calibrated the timing from 5 TDC to 16 TDC.

any suggestions?

I'm gonna attack the fuel filter tomorrow...and hopefully get an o2 somewhere.

Who did the build for you? change your fuel filter and double check on your fpr, and plus if you havent change your headgasket, that could be the problem for causing the white smoke, never reuse old gasket, and if you hear knocks, hopefully its nothing to do with the rods or pistons....Keep me updated, im in the processing of building a motor too, luckily my teacher is helping me.

The build was done by a member on here. He built it and sold the car to me, he replaced all gaskets with OEM parts (he gave me receipts). FPR? Fuel pressure? hmm, during my smog check today, the fuel cap failed the test--you think if that has anything to do with some of my problems? The knocks i'm not sure, but maybe a valve adjustment is needed as recommended by the Prev owner. Teacher's helping you? Lucky bastard haha
