Was changing my oil the other day and noticed this hole in the bottom of my transmission...

What could of caused this? Is it still ok to use this tranny?

 

yeah you can use it, looks like something hit your clutch housing, a rock maybe? may get a little dirty and dusty inside.

So you dont think anything is wrong inside of my tranny?

If i were you i would get that fixed as soon as possible because dirt and oil may enter the bell housing and get on the clutch, which will cause your clutch to start slipping and wear faster than normal. Aslo that crack will cause your transmission housing to be that much more weaker. Sooner you get it fixed the less you'll suffer in the long run.

 

can can i just have that welded up? and where would i go for something like this?

 

It was most likely from bottoming out on a big rock or something similar.It will be ok though.Though it would be best to get it welded up or at least jb weld something on it to cover it up,its not 100% necessary.Ive run thousand's of miles without the flywheel shield on many of my cars and have had no problems..it just helps prevent any large objects from entering the bell housing and possibly causing something to happen.Like I said though,ive never had a problem,but that doesnt mean you wont.

Yep

 

My 98+ jdm itr tranny has a quarter size hole in it on the bottem side where it meets the block. I have the "type r dust shield", so said the guy i bought the car from, so what exactly is that and should i still get that hole welded up?
