Default How hard is it to change a steering rack with hand tools?

I took my car to a mechanic today because I get knocking sounds from the rack when I hit bumps. He checked it out and told me it was my rack. This is the second mechanic that has said this.

Thanks

I always used air but it only takes about 20 minutes both ways on a non-power steering 88-91 civic rack with no engine in it. Make sure you line the steering rack up with the steering column. I made that mistake once and ended up ripping the column out to get it all together. Not fun.

I changed it in my garage with handtools. There was no engine in the car at the time and I completely forget how long it took. However it wasn't very hard to do at all.

I have a question refering to this topic. My 94' HB is doing the same thing. (knocking sounds when going over bumps) What causes this? and what will happen if I dont fix it right away? Also does the motor have to come out to replace the steering rack? TIA

I have no clue how hard it would be to replace it with the engine in. My buddy changed over to non p/s in his coupe with the engine in but have no clue what he did to do it. As for the knock sound its probably a bad bushing or loose suspension part of some sort.

Thanks for the info, but what part of the suspension and what bushing. I am not too familair with the steering column of my hatch. Do you know how to find out what is wrong.(how do you troubleshoot it) Is there a way to tell if it is bushing or suspension? TIA

First place to start looking is at your upper A arm or lower control arm. If you don't know what you are looking at or working on take it to a shop that does stuff like that.

One thing that I notice is that my steering wheel moves up and down a little. I haven't had a chance to take it off yet but it is a aftermarket wheel. My control arms are skunk2. (brand new) Where is the sway bar endlink? I am unfamilair with that part of the suspension. TIA
