Default got some questions, just replaced my head gasket

well heres the story, about 8 months ago i noticed that it (88 CRX Si) was starting to smoke a little more than normal and there was little black dots apearing on the rear of my car, and on top of all that theres was oil beginning to saturate my collant. head gasket ok no problem

today i did my head gasket, timing belt, water pump, and valve cover gaskets. when we opened it up we noticed that the timing belt had streched to the point where you could more the crank about 5 degrees in either direction without moving the cam at all!!! and it still ran like a champ, beating my friends 95 teg LS and my bosses v-6 mustang no problem. the mechanic that helped me said he was boggled as to how it even still ran.

any way back to the problem, we put the new head gasket and everything on and it started up right away no problem, runs great, accelerates great, back fires a little on decell but i thinks it a timing thing anyway it still smokes on acceleration. is that a normal thing for a head gasket job? i only drove it like 20 miles so far since i did it and it has decreased a bit but im a little worried that something went wrong oil is or collent is being burnt? any help would be great.

by the way, its all car quest parts and i do have the honda manual so im fairly sure everything was done right. thanks

yea i was thinking about getting oem parts but i just wanted something to get me through the next school year cause i have a 90 ls thats waiting to be rebuilt and go in. and if this motor blows the only other option is a 77 chevy truck. 400 CI with a 4 barrel, (my winter car). it gets costly buying gas considering i drive 30 miles round trip every day to school

sny body else?

black "soot" or spots wouldn't be a result of a bad head gasket. Mine does the same thing. If I sit there and rev it around say, im adjusting the idle or whatnot i will end up w/ black spots/wet marks all over the ground behind the exhaust pipe. My HG was just done a month ago at most.

This black crud is a byproduct of water/ exhaust. That's my only guess as my car runs good.. but idles like poop.

yes i realize it WAS the head gasket but i replaced it yesterday. i washed my car and beat it a little and no more black.

my question, is the white smoke normal for a head gasket job right after its done?

How many miles are on that engine??

It seems like a high mileage engine to me, so I guess your rings are bad if you say your smoking on acceleration. Age do wear out parts so that might be it.

Also it's not necessary to get OEM man, stuff from AutoZone has warranty and it's cheaper. I use it and would recommend it.

anything that saves money is a good thing.

it has 176,XXX miles on it. the only thing thats left is the rings i guess. i did notice that the PCV hose was getting sucked shut due to vaccum. i pulled it off and the pcv was good but the hose was very week so i replaced it and it did cut down on the amount of smoke.

did any body read that article about pouring ATF in the cylinders and letting them soak to break forzen rings free. i think i read it on crx.honda-perf.org but i can't seem to find the write up. does anybody have a link to it? thanks

White smoke would be normal if you didn't completely clean the cylinders of excess coolant, but it shouldn't last for long.
Valve stem seals are also a possible cause of smoke (blue usually)
blue smoke = burning oil
white smoke = burning water/coolant
black smoke is usually running rich
