Default engine stutters and stalls after driving for a while

Actually a friends car. It only does it after it has been driven for a while, and the car doesnt over heat. I'm thinking its either fuel filter or the ignition coil. I'm reallie hoping its not the coil, but I think it is because the coil behaves differently with temperature wheras i dont believe the fuel filter/fuel does. He has an external coil too.
What do you guys think it is? could be something else? I guess im going to try changing the fuel filter first, but I dont think it will do n e thing.

What model and how many miles on the car?

Does he have any modifications?

When was the last maintenance done, and what was done?

Mine does something similar as well. It doesn't sputter and stall, but once warmed up or started on a hot day, and it will tend to idle lower and rougher. Especially if i turn the A/C on, I can get my car close to stalling---and i have good compression across the board!

Must be something with fuel delivery, injectors, spark... something?!
