I bought a set of spark plug wires in my quest to do little mods from time to time until I hit 120k and swap.. but I ran into a little problem

I put the plug wires in in the right firing order..



then, after driving forward 5-7 feet and back:



what's going on with this? I could actually hear them go "pop" out of the head.

any fixes for this? or shall I go back to the stockies?

 

be sure your getting them all the way on there, also be sure their the right ones. if those are for a non-vtec motor like the dx, they wont sit all the way down in there and will do exactly what yours did. be sure you get them for the sohc vtec, as they are about a quarter of an inch longer. hope that helps. compare them with your old ones and see if theres any kind of physical difference.

 

His is non VTEC.

 

im sorry i didnt specify. if you got plug wires for a non-vtec motor out of a 88-95, those are what i was talking about. where the plug wires are on the backs ide of the head. some stores list them as the same part#. sorry for the confusion.

 

if you screwed up the firing order take out all the wires and crank the motor just a little to find out which direction the rotor spins. find #1 on the dist cap once you find that then attach the wire to the #1 on the cap and then to the #1 cylinder which is closest to the cam gear. the firing order for the motor is 1-3-4-2. so the next one to fire would be the #3 cylinder so then attach that wire to the cap and to the plug and then the nex t would be 4 then 2. remeber to follow the direction of the rotor when putting the wires on.

 

I bought them from a guy that had the exact same engine as I did.. and he never had any troubles with them.

is it possible that the distributer num's change?

I'm new to performance.. and I'm trying to learn as much as I can.. this is just really annoying..

edit: I also had them in the whole way down as far as they would go.

 

those are the wrong wires for that engine.

 

why do you think they're the wrong plugs? they worked find in my friends d16y7 engine when he had them

how old are they and did he take them off many times, the metal part inside where the plug head catches into will wear out and not bite the head of the plug tightly

 

I think he took them out a total of 3 times... I'll have to check with him later becuz his comp is down...

would it help if I took a pair of needle nose plyers and tightened them down a bit so they clamp down on the plugs better?

it couldnt hurt

 

you could try it but if the bottom end of them where it conect to the plug is a hard plastic i wouldn't shove a pair of needle nose in there cuz it will break i learned the hard way

 

first off what engine do you have 1,5?? or 1.6? if you have the 1.5 and he had the 1.6 then the plugs will be linger for the 1.6 and hence the gap.. but if you have the 1.6 also the fireing order should be

4-2
3-1

 

best thing you can do is put a set of new OEM wires on there-superior fit and quality.
many possibilies as to why they're popping off-wrong wires for your motor,loose plug letting compression into the plug well and blowing off the wire,worn wires that just don't fit well any more,aftermarket wires that are shitty in the first place and never did fit right,etc.
put your old wires back on if they're still in good condition and you still have them.if not,go buy some new factory wires.there are no HP gains to be had in this area for you with aftermarket wires,just problems liek you're having now.
