Funny Reverse Noise

When I throw my car into reverse and start backing up I get a funny sound like gears inside the tranny are rubbing. This only happens in reverse any ideas how to make it go away without overhauling the tranny.....maybe a little lucas transmission fix?
The reason is because ur reverse gear is a straight tooth design much like that of nascar which is the reason it so loud. Also reverse is the only straight design so no i wouldn't worry about a overhaul it would sound the same when ur done
I 2 have this problem, a mechanic friend of mine suggested that my gearbox oil was running low but when i checked it it was sweet as.
I dont know if its anything to major as my gearbox has only recently been pulled apart by a gearbox specialist (i siezed the bush in reverse doing reverse donuts) and he never found anything else wrong in that department. (my reverse was makn the noise before doin the donuts by the way)

OHHH I get it, so every manual car going into reverse sounds like a dozen metal forks in a blender? I think not...... something is definatly wrong and the sound dosn't simply happen when I switch into the gear the sound happens as I back up as well. Sounds similar to when I had a loose cat. heat shield on my crx except inside the tranny this time around.
the only way reverse is bad is if there is a wine in all gears that increases pitch with speed. thats the reverse idler wearing. reverse should make a loud winey sound and increase pitch and possibly volumn with increased speed. reverse is a spur cutter just like stated before thats why it wines. the other gears (all of them) are helical cut and damn near silent + stronger.... its a pretty neat design but i wont go into it... but thats the reason the others are silent. also reverse is not syncronized, so thats why you clash a little sometimes going into reverse even on a brand new tranny. reverse actually pushes a gear into another gear, it doesn't slide a sleeve over clutching teeth that have a brass blocking ring in between to act as a friction material to equalize sleeve/gear speed.
hopefully that explains any sounds you're getting from reverse gear.

I've been driving standard tranny cars for 6 years and I know the winey sound on every manual tranny car this isn't the first time I've used reverse. That isn't the sound I'm speaking of, nor is the sound as reverse is engaged. The release bearing is going in the car and can be heard in all gears however when in reverse the sound I hear is horrible and not normal, it happens as the car is in motion and it has a tinny clanking broken sound. Its not the normal reverse squeal that is always heard it sounds like metal gears grinding together and broken peices of metal inside the tranny. I'm thinking nobody has the answer here so I'll just have to pull the tranny and have a look for myself. Thanks for trying though.

THATS WHY?.... thanks for that brief explination. I always wondered why I couldn't put my cars (all hondas) into reverse while the car was still moving forward slowly even though I have the clutch down.
