Default [FAQ] How-to Set your Idle, Idle speed, Idle Adjustment (search friendly)

Ok.. our damn 88-91 cars seem to have terrible idles. (Mine included).

Here are some steps to properly set your idle speed.

1. Warm up the car completely, you want the cooling fan to come on, and then turn off again to signify full warm. Make sure all electrical accessories are off (Heater, headlights, stereo, defroster etc)

2. Disconnect the IACV electrical plug.
The IACV is the metal object circled in red.

3. Turn the Idle screw (clockwise to lower idle, counter-clockwise to raise) until your idle is around 600-650 rpm. As we all know the stock tachs are inaccurate so you may want to have an aftermarket tach of some sort or a AFC or whatever to see engine rpm's.

4. Once you have dialed in the base idle shut the car off.

5. Plug the IACV plug back in and remove the fused labelled "HAZARD" in the underhood fuse box for 20 seconds. Re-insert the fuse.

6. restart your car. let it idle for 1-2 min with NO electrical load. Meaning headlights off, AC off, Stereo off, Heater off, EVERYTHING off.

7. After that turn the headlights and highbeams on and let it idle for 1 min.

8. turn those off, then turn the AC on MAX for 1 min. (if equipped).

9. With that done turn your car off and you have sucessfully adjusted your idle.

If for some reason you still cannot get the idle to spec using this procedure you have something else wrong.

as long as you're running obd-0 it should be the same for all civics/teg and their respective motors.

This is a good write up. How ever, this worked on my freinds crx,not on mine. On my car after we did all of the above. I had to go back and take off the Thermal Idel Control Valve. Theres also a good write up on H-T about this.

I thought it was only 10 seconds to reset the ecu? Hmmm, 10 seconds of overkill won't hurt anything.
