Changing tranny fluid, help.
Ok I've always done my own oil change/basic maintenance etc. I've never changed tranny fluid and was wondering where is the bolt located to release old fluids. Also what kind of tranny oil do I buy? How much quarts do I pour? One of my buddies said it's ok to use regular engine oil to fill the tranny? Is he correct? My car is a 98 civic.
Use 2 quarts of honda MTF
The drain bolt is on the passenger side below the axle, and you can stick the end of a 3/8" ratchet into it...The fill bolt is above and to the left of the axle and is a 17mm

i seriously wouldn't listen to this friend of yours anymore. Engine oil much much different than tranny fluid. I hope he hasn't given you any other advice.

you CAN use straight 30w motor oil.
but of course that is not the best for your transmission!
duh,
you could use any motor oil, seriously, but Honda MTF is by far THE BEST stuff to use.

How do you know, using this method, when the tranny has been filled to the proper level?

Yes, you can use motor oil, the type / weight is specified in the manual. I used Honda MTF for the first few times, but now I use synchromesh ( http://www.stealth316.com/2-pe...h.htm ) and haven't looked back. Good stuff.

you still leave the fill hole open and just watch till its full, i think its easier to fill through the speed sensor

Didn't see anyone mention that the car needs to be level when changing the tranny fluid. So put the front *AND* rear on jackstands. If you don't have enough jackstands, then find a level place to jack up the car. Put the front on stands, and just lift the rear with a jack.
