Default autometer gauges hookup

so considering that i need a 12v line that doesnt get temporarily cut when the car is started, i tried getting to the ignition line along the steering column. now i cant get to the end of the line since its covered by the plastic cover on the column, of which i cant remove unless i remove the steering wheel (stupid one piece design ).

id prefer to not cut into the wire covering along the entire length of cables under there. this is for a 2000 civic ex btw.

1) is there another 12v source i can use thats easier to get to?
2) if not, how can i remove the steering wheel? search has brought me nothing sadly enough.
3) any other suggestions

bah, sitting upside down in my fully reclined seat just after dinner probing with a voltmeter just didnt make my evening.

on my car theres a spot on the fuse panel with some spade connectors on the top that give you constant 12v acc and run and start ext. You should be able to tie in there or if that fails theres a wire going to the radio thats allways live for the memory function. or theres an product that goes into behind one of the spades of the fuses giving you a spot to add a circuit to that as well. so you would have to find a spot there and insert one of those doo-hickies but id sagest the radio spot id you dont have the expansion ports on the fuse block under the dash.

If you remove the cluster you can just tap off the power wire into the cluster for the lighting. It should be red and black but to be sure use a multimeter and test the circuit for which givws you no voltage when the lights are off and 12volts when on.

yea, i have to tap the dimmer line for the gauges since i have the c2 with the blue indiglo but the gauges also require a 12v for functionality as well - 4 wire i believe. 12v power, ground, dimmer, sensor tap for reading.

edit: oh yea, all power to the cluster is cut when the car is started, i tested all the leads on all 5 clips that connect to my cluster. and besides that, the voltage at its highest only reaches 7.4 volts on the dimmer. oh well.

yea, those are some good ideas nocturnal.

i forgot the radio kept a memory, which means constant power. i should have room on the fuse panel tho, id rather tap that instead since it would just provide for a cleaner install. you would think that after staring at it upside down for an hour, it would have hit me, hah. thanks, ill take a look at it tomorrow.

edit: just to elaborate, the c2 gauges i have (like a lot of autometers i think) have a power up calibration and thats why they require a constant power line. i guess having it disrupted amidst calibration over and over would lead to, say, miscalibration perhaps?

edit again: about the radio... now that i think about it, its on all the time, not just when the keys in. no good there. ive decided to tap one of my fuses for the voltage.

ok, for anyone whos curious, i finally finished everything today and heres how it looks:

ctr cluster overlay and guage pod, i love that carbon fiber look

anyway, i was wondering if anyone else has a c2 air fuel ratio gauge and if its supposed to look like this when lit.

notice how its only lit on the inner part instead of everywhere. it cant be a wiring problem simply because it would light up or it wouldnt, and it does. its either supposed to be like that or its damaged somehow. im leaning towards supposed to be like that. and plus i dont really wanna take it apart again.

can you take some pictures of your turbo setup....

your guage cluster looks like a white face guage with carbon fiber from pepboys.. where do you think you have a civic type r cluster. Second.. i really wanna see your engine bay.

ok, first off, i didnt say i had a ctr gauge cluster. i said ctr cluster overlay. thats just the carbon fiber pattern around the gauges, and yes that was genuine honda. the other ones just a standard gauge pod and i wasnt trying to brag about any special cluster, i was just pointing out i like the carbon fiber look. i know the ctr cluster doesnt look anything like that. so dont bust my ***** cuz you cant read.

and second, im not going turbo, i have a jr supercharger in my garage. im just doing the small stuff first. vafc2 is next. supercharger within a month, still debating on boost pulley upgrade or not. this thread was about the hookup of the gauges, why you tryin to call me out on something i didnt say? i specifically posted those pics for my last question about my afr gauge, but thanks for answering it.

and you wanna see my engine bay so bad? i have the standard bolt ons right now basically, but i got nothin to hide. ill be more than happy to post a pic.

the gauage can have power and light up but did you hit the correct signal wire for the A/F guage, otherwise those little led lights on the outside wont work.

i tapped the right wire for the actual readings from the ecu, thats no problem. i mean the white border surrounding the leds, not the leds themselves. notice how the blue glow is only coming from the inner part of the gauge, not around the leds. thats what i was wondering about.

Why would you have to take your steering wheel off to access the ignition harness?? The ignition harness will be wrapped in plastic or tape...you can't miss it as soon as you take off the underdash panel. There will be about 6 12 gauge wires. You can use solid white for constant 12v or Black/yellow, solid yellow, or white/black for ignition/accessory wires. I am 100% sure of this. Your parking light wire will be red/black 18 gauge in case you have to use that.....hope this helps........

tapped ignition fuse (i think its this one, memory lapse already) in relay box for power, dimmer line from cluster for lighting, ground to chassis, afr gauge tapped to ecu pinout (c16, white) for signal, and boost gauge connected thru firewall to included map sensor. seems easy once its working.
