Default Blue smoke when reving in neutral?

Hi, i just noticed this problem today when i was setting my idle, B16a motor. The car was idling at normal operating temperature for about 5 min then i reved it up in neutral to about 6000rpm and I noticed a bit of blueish/blackish smoke coming out of the exhaust but not a lot and this only happens when i rev it up. Now i know that blue smoke means im burning oil so does this mean my seals are gone? Or is this sort of normal because I heard VTEC engines do burn a little oil now and then. My oil level seems to be pretty consistent too

Any ideas?

only way to tell if it is your rings is to do a compression test.

yeah compression test first. but that still wont tell u if the rings r gone or not. cause u could just have a bad oil control ring. and your compression rings may still be good. but at least its somewhere to start. also it could be valve guides. i dont know of a way to test those for leaking.

also u said blue or blackish smoke. if the smoke is black. its just running a bit rich, no big deal. so if your oil level stays very consistent. that would be my guess as to whats happening. alot of vtec cars give a big black puff when vtec is engaged.

Yeah i think im just a bit paranoid. Does oil control ring require a rebuild? When doing a compression test is there a certain amount of pressure a B16a should be getting or is consistancy across all cylinders the key?

I think it might be your rings, something foreign is getting into the cylinder either fuel or oil. Check your spark plugs to see if there is any oil on them, if so I would check all your seals, gaskets, and o-rings to find out where the oil is getting in. You need to determine which it is, blue smoke or black smoke, I hope for you it's black. Good luck.

i think youre cylinder pess should be around 220 for a real good engine. and no lower than 180.

and oil control rings should be able to just be replaced. as long as there is no cylinder wall damage. but u should be able to find that out by doin a compression test.

A.) Do You Run Rich?

B.) Do You Run Your Car Hard?

These questions could lead you to your answer:

A.) IF your car runs ruch either b/c of a chipped ecu or some other part, this could be your problem. If so you may want to get it tuned.

B.) If your car is not ran hard, like mine, then when you do get on it you will notice the carbon build-up escaping through the exhaust pipe.

I have both of these problems and on occasion my car smokes when I hit vtec due to the carbon build-up from driving it slow all the time.

Also you may want to check to see if you have any check engine codes being thrown.

IF neither of these is the case, then you may have a problem.....

I do have a VAFC but its running stock settings. Due to the VAFC, you can VTEC in neutral right? What im thinking is when I rev it up in neutral VTEC kicks in and the injectors dump a **** load of fuel into the cylinders making a rich mixture. I still got to check whether the smoke is definately blue or black.

well on my vafc it has the vto and the vti. And it says ON. So i am guessing that it dose go on. Also my friend said that he heard it engage. I told him he was probably hearing things.

On my VAFC when i rev it in neutral, only one is on, either VTi or VTo. I can't remember which one though

VTEC does engage in neutral. If you have the vafcII and are deaf and cannot hear it engage , you can see that when you cross-over the dial turns from green to red even in neutral. However, I can hear mine engage quite boldly
