Default D16y8 swap into 92 DX which distributor?

Greetings all,

I just finished my first swap; a D16y8 into a 92 DX hatch. I have the new engine connected and running on the old ecu (P06). I have the right ecu for the y8 (P28), but when I put it in I can not advance the timing enough. I was reading in the Helms book I have that the non-VTEC should be at ~8 deg and the VTEC is ~12 deg. My questions:

1) Which distributor should I use? (Currently the original D15 distributor is being used D16z6 won't mount)
2) Can I use the base from a D16y8 and put the insides from the original (OBD1) into it?
3) Can I enlarge the mounting holes in the original D15 to allow for enough adjustment? Will this weaken the mouting too much?

Thanks for helping a newbie!

The D16Z6 dizzy should bolt up. I can't remember if it did or not.

If not, I would take the plug off the OBD2 and also the OBD1 dizzy, and use the OBD1 plugs to pin up the OBD2 distributor.

Simple color matching.

HTH.

Thanks Brandon! The problem is the distributor from the D16y8 did not come with the motor. I only have a D16Z6 (mounting holes are way off) and D15b(?? 5 maybe) The D15B distributor mounts up to the y8 head, but I can not quite get the timing set right. I need another ~1/8 inch of adjustment. I am afraid that if I hollow out the mounting holes it will weaken the distributor too much. Thoughts?

Thanks,

i am under the assumption that the Dx(b7) distributor will work fine. for the Z6 you need a Z6 dist.

you need a y8 distributor. find one at a local junk yard or a shop thats just laying there.

all u have to do is get a $5soldering iron from harbor frieght and cut the plugs off the obd1 distributor u have right now match the colors up and solder away

I used my stock D15b7 dizzy on a y8 head when i put it on, bolted right up & no timing problems. I only swapped the head/IM though, not the bottom end/block.

i wonder if you could just swap out the guts from a d15 into the d16y8 dizzy...but yeah the d15 does bolt up and you shouldn't have a problem, if you still need a little more adjustment...then just bore out the mounting holes a little bit more, 1/8 won't affect the mounting holes..hope this helps

Thanks for all the replies. It seems the old dizzy from the original engine (D15B8, I checked) should work. The old brain, which I understand needs 8 degree advance on the timing, works great. The new P28 (needs 12 deg timing) is still retarded a bit at full adjustment. One of my friends (a mechanic by trade) thought that the timing belt had slipped a tooth. I had to help a friend move today so didn't feel up to working on the car, but tomorrow I will check the timing belt. What do you guys think, would the card still run if the timing belt is a tooth off? Would the timing belt aslo cause the lack of full adjustment on the distributor?

Thanks,

Soldering wouldn't be required. All you need to do is remove the pins from the OBD2 plug and OBD1 plug,a nd salve the OBD1 plugs from the D15 dizzy to the OBD2 Y8 distributor.

The colors will match and you'll be good to go.

The timing belt is not off a tooth. I bored out the mounting hole just slightly and it allows me to get very close on the timing, but not 100%. I am now getting an occasional O2 CEL. I did a quick splice conversion from 1-wire to 4-wire o2 sensor. I am now going back and soldering in the o2 wires to see if that helps. The o2 sensor I am using was on the D16Y8. Would this sensor work fine w/ a p28 ecu? Are the sensors for OBDII cars different from ODBI cars?

Thanks,
