Need help with Idle Surge Problem
After my 3rd IACV, I have realized there must be something else causing my idle surge and cel I get at idle. It seems to be more frequent after an interstate run and/or after the car is completely warm. It stops when I unplug the IACV or I reset the ecu. I have searched and came up with a few possible solutions. I am thinking about taking off my intake manifold and cleaning it and replacing the gasket at the tb/intake manifold b/c it bubbles when I spray carb cleaner on it. How should I clean the intake manifold? Is there anything else I should check while I'm at it? I kept seeing people mention checking all vacuum lines, does anyone have a diagram that shows which hoses to check? If anyone has any other suggestions I would appreciate it. Thanks
This is a common occurance. It may be a leaking throttle body gasket or intake manifold gasket. You are headed in the right direction by wanting to clean the intake manifold and/or replace the intake manifold gasket. Also, the IAC valve has a figure eight o-ring gasket that may need to be replaced. As far as vacuum lines are concerned, the only one that I know of on the intake manifold is the one for the brake booster and one for the fuel pressure regulator. This is of course for an ITR. The IAC valve has water hoses coming from underneath it that runs to the water passage pipe in the engine block. Then there is the PCV hose that runs from the middle of the manifold and to the black box on the engine block. Another water hose is at the passenger side of the intake manifold and connects to the thermostat housing. That's about all the hoses I know of. I'm not sure what other vacuum source is available.

There is also the purge vacuum line going to the fuel purge selenoid.

I had this problem about a month or so ago. So hopefully this help. (Yes, I actually did all of these)
1. Reset Ecu
2. New Spark Plugs
3. New Cap
4. New Rotor
5. Adjusted timing back to 16
6. Spray lines with Intake Manifold Cleaner (Should suck in if leaking)
7. Adjusted Idle Control
8. New Fuel Filter
Somewhere along there, it was fixed. Another thing, when you do tighten everything back up, make sure it is torqued properly! Hope it helps...

Also check for leaks and hardening on the vacuum line to the brake booster. Follow the Helms instructions for checking the brake booster. You could have a leak in the booster diaphram.
