Thinking about getting a Del Sol
I am thinking about getting a second car for a daily driver. My V8 takes up too much gas and I hate filling it up twice a week (my driving habits suck). Anyhow, I saw a 94 del sol manual at a dealership yesterday for 2900. The dealership was closed so I just glanced at it. A few questions:
Do you think 2900 is a fair deal? The exterior was in fair condition as well as the interior from what I could see.
How much do these things weigh?
What is the redline?
How much power (to the wheels) do these things make, and what engine is in them? B16a? Is this a good motor?
I wont be making this too terribly fast-just bolt ons. Does it benefit significantly with boltons, and if so which ones?
Thanks for your time!

Well it depends... the are 3 models, the S, Si, and Vtec. S has the d15, Si has a d16z6 and the Vtec has a B16a3 dohc engine. How many miles in on it and if the car is in good shape body and engine wise that sounds like a good deal. Considering you see del sol's go anywhere from 6k from one with high miles to almost as much as 10k for a very nice one.
damn where do you live, 10k for a del sol? i got my clean title, very clean 95 del sol vtec with 120k miles for 4k, 1 year ago. if it is a S model it is about the right price. i doubt it will be the si model or the vtec model.
just picked up a 93 Si.. exterior was in good shape, interior in perfect shape.. 180k on the clock no smoke out of the exhaust.. runs good.. picked it up for 2500 so yeah 2900 is a fair price

Drive one first, then see what you have to ask. I almost got a Del Sol, but after being in one, I realized that the car was too small for me. Even for a daily driver. I have bad knees and I really have to stretch my legs when I drive for a long time; that's how I realized that CRXes and DelSols were not the best cars for me.

How is that a bad thing?
Some info:
Del Sols were available in '93 as well, but only in S and Si trim.
The D16Z6 and D16Y8 are both SOHC VTEC engines.
This link: http://www.teamdelsol.com/technical has some great info. Check out the FAQ section and you'll find weights and various other specs on all Sols (engine specs, brake specs, etc.)
$2900 for a '94 doesn't sound too bad, but it's probably an S model. If you're looking for a daily driver to mod lightly I'd pick up either an Si or a VTEC. The engines, brakes and suspension are superior to the S model.
Sols are fairly heavy cars for their size, but they're fun to drive, and the targa top is hard to beat. Just an FYI, but the '93-'94 models had some problems with the targa seals, and so if I were you, I'd try to find a '95. The '95 and up cars had redesigned seals to fix leaking problems.
If you do check out that '94 further, look for water stains on the seats, that's a tell-tale sign that the seals will leak.
As for power, the S model has ~100 hp, Si ~125 hp, and VTEC 160 hp. Subtract about 25-30 hp for drivetrain loss and you'll get your whp figures.

I had a friend looking at a vtec model from a private seller and they was asking $9,500 and would not budge one bit. From what I remember they bought it new, drove it on weekends, kept the miles low, never been smoked in, babied it, etc... etc... car was clean as a pin. My friend decided for a little more money he could get an si so he bought one.

Yes! Del Sol! Fun! Uncommon! Targa top! I paid 2900 for mine before taxes and fees a month ago. It's an S model (to save me money on insurance, engine swap next summer) and has 190k miles but in excellent condition. Was in one minor accident, front needs to be re-aligned
Book value was over 4k so, got a good deal. Had to drive 5 hours for it but well worth the ride
Couldn't wipe the smile off my face driving it home if I got punched in the face.
Also, at the automotiveforums someone had got a quote from Honda to get the seals and get them installed, it was around 800. I'd recommend 95 if you could find. 96 and 97 they removed the auxillary lights. This both makes it harder to find body kits, and looks worse IMO. 95 they made a number of improvements, including fixing the leaky seals.

most 93-94 del sols, if the owners were smart and aware would of had the seals fixed for free at the time of the recall. But just check if it has the newer version. You have to look at certain point on the seal. It has a flap or catch thing to catch drips. It is located where the window touches the seal. But more specifically where. ON the door glass, the part that does not roll down, on the top point. where it touches the seal. It is not on the door seal but on the targa seal.
