Default Timing question: dissy position with relation to degress

I have a crappy timing gun, so I could be the problem.

When I have my dissy moved all the way torwards the radiator, its close to 0 degrees.

When I have my dissy moved all most (90%) all the way towards the firewall, its at 16 degress.

Does this sound right? I left it at 16 degress.

Nick

Maybe that's an excuse to check your camshaft timing? Mine is closer to the middle when the timing is stock. YMMV... but it can't hurt to check.

I do.. If you cam timing is adjusted or off a tooth then you will need to move the dizzy more to bring the ignition timing into spec..

say my timing is off a tooth, if I can bring it into spec by moving the dissy way forward advance. Is it ok?

FIRST, check your timing sprockets to see if your CAM timing is OK. If you have a shop manual, look up CHANGING the TIMING BELT. Maybe it's just fine...

Then you can use your timing light again, to check your spark timing.

JimBlake is right.. I think your getting cam timing and ignition timing confused.. The reason ignition timing moves with cam timing is because the cam shaft runs the dizzy..

Check you cam timing first to make sure its correct.. If that right then adjust the dizzy to 16 and your done.. Make sure your timing light is working correctly and all that..
