Default timing mark

I have a b18a which I have been trying to get timed, however I couldn't find the timing mark. Same thing happened to the guys at this shop I go to and when I went to get my car smogged. The guy at the smog check shop simply made a mark and checked my timing. My question is: should there be a certain point in which the timing mark is on? Like say, at the point of TDC the mark should be in a certain spot? Thanks for any help.
