Default RPM's Hang when shifting...

hey, i'm a good 'ol newbie, previously a turbo dodge guy, but i just bought a 1987 civic GL 4door 1.5carburated. It only has 100,000 original milies. Very good shape. Regardless, when rowing throught the gears, the rpms hang when driving. Example, when shifiting from 2 to 3rd gear, you have to wait almost a few seconds to release the clutch because when you let off the gas, the rpms take time to go back down. Does this make sence? When you rev the motor, the rpms rise fast, but go back down slowly.

Anything i could do, or some idea's i could try?
thanks!

i think when you engage the gear it will bring the needle back to a lower rpm. i've never really paid it notice but i definately do not wait any amount of time before releasing the clutch.

Seems that my '89 CRX Si does the same thing...the engine revs don't drop quickly, they take a while to come down when I push in the clutch.

I was starting to think it may be an exhaust issue...possibly due to an old (and maybe clogged) cat and therefore increased backpressure? Could that be part of it?

thanks Alex, i agree with you, that may be a problem with the cat, but i am going to look at my exhaust system, which the cat may have already been removed, i think i only have a resonator and a muffler. In alberta, cats arent required...YET...but will be soon. The owner before me must have taken it out...

I will check tonight.

Maybe it's normal? Maybe the flywheel is heavy on those cars and keep the rmp up between shifts.

well, seems the more aggresivly i drive it, the faster the rpms drop, and becuase i have my new clutch in, i can actually get on the gas with out the clutch slipping, the rpms drop back to normal.
thanks guys!
