there is a ticking sound coming from my valve cover. my friend suggested that it could be carbon buildups on the valves so we flushed and cleaned the engine and filled with mobile one. it still ticks. any ideas what this is or how to fix it?

 

it could be your valves tapping. try to get it adjusted.

Or it might be your injectors. Never hurts to do a valve adjustment though.

Yeah, valve adjust cured it for me. Happens to most hondas out there.

I would run through a quick valve adjustment before I panicked. Chances are you have a little slack in the valve train if you have any amount of mileage at all.

 

A stethescope (sp?) would help you narrow down the problem. My car still was ticking after a few valve adjustments, and we later found out it was a noisy dsm injector.

 

What motor do you have?

I got ticking sounds from my valve cover right before the engine seized. There was an oil leak.

 

engine is a 1.6 dohc. full oil. mobile one. ticked before and after oil change. almost positive its the valves cuz i put my ear on valve cover and thats where the ticking came from. sounds like i need to adjust my valves. how do i go about adjusting my valves?

Is it a USDM B16A2 or JDM b16a?

does it only tick when it's cold or does it do it anytime even when it's warmed up? I need to get my valves adjusted I have 144,000 miles, I talked to honda about it they claim it's just piston slap cause it does it when it's cold as the engine warms up the piston's change a little bit. IMO I think their full of crap and I'm still gonna get my valves adjusted cause I have that many miles and I've never had it done.

A Valve Adjustment won't only cure your ticking but it will net you a little better gas mileage and a few horsepower. I just performed it on my motor and using the correct feeler gauges I found them to be very loose and out of spec. So I tightened them back to their proper tension. Good luck. Do a search if your are looking for a detailed how-to. If you are going to do it yourself it may take up to almost an hour if it is your first time and you are learning but after just a few times and some experience you will be able to do this in under twenty minutes or so.

ONLY an hour? thats fast! for a beginner

 

i think most people on honda-tech are technically skilled therefore getting the hang of technical procedures such as valve adjustments is common. i am saying it is likely this can be easily learned fast by this guy

 

if the adjustment dosent help or you want a cheaper way to solve your problem, just go to a auto parts store and buy a quart of LUCAS oil stabalizer and next time you change your oil add that into the change ( so you swap that quart for one of the quarts of oil you would use) it works wonders i used it and i havent had problems since

I have a 95 civic lx with 58K miles and the valves tick when it is cold. once it warms up it goes away. I asked my local shop and they said as long as it goes away when its warm you are ok because they are self adjusting valves.

I also have a slight whistle type noise. i have no mods (yet) anyone know what this is. I think it is the stock air intake but not sure. Car runs damn good though so im not to concerned --&gt; its sometimes annoying.

 

As far as your valves go, i agree with the shop...as long as the sound goes away when warm you should be fine.

The whistling could be a couple of things. Depending on where you are hearing it, could be the vaccuum system for the intake. If it has just started making the sound, you may need to tighten the screw on the face of the throttle body. It may have loosened over time. It is to the left of where the intake comes into the throttle body. If you are going to move it tho...mark the screw and the throttle body and count the number or complete turns you make so you can put it back if it doesnt remedy the situation.

On the other hand, if youre hearing it on the other side of the motor, could be your water pump. Mine was making a whistle/high pitch squeel type of noise. Replaced it and it was fine.

 

how tight do i tighten the screw if this is the case?
