Default Help with tach!

I just purchased a tach and was wondering if I should install it, or is it better to take it to a professional.

I am not smart when it comes to wiring but how would I do it if I tried.

it will be a piece of cake, just find out what wires go where and you will be set. the stripping and combining of wires is really easy. solder if you can, it is the best way to go i think.

Here's just something to think about.

You can buy a EX or SI gauge cluster that has the stock tach and it will be a direct replacement with your gauge cluster, and the tach will work with no wiring.

This way you have a tach, and you don't have to worry about wiring up an aftermarket tach, and drilling holes in your dash, and hiding wires.

you could just swap out the speedo portion of your gauge cluster into the tach equiped one.

But to answer your original question, to install an aftermarket tach is easy.

I think there's three wires that you're going to be dealing with. A 12 volt power which you can run to turn on with the ignition, a ground, and the tach wire which you can tap into off of the dirstributor its the blue wire.

Here, connect these wires:

1. Green Tach wire splices to blue wire behind cluster.
2. Black Tach wire goes to ground, usually a screw behind dash.
3. Red Tach wire splices to black with yellow stripe behind cluster or behind dash switches.
4. White Tach wires splices to black with red stripe behind cluster or behind dash switches.

I would prefer to mount on left side of dash since it will not be in the way. Mounting on the right side of dash will block a lot of view.

If it's one of those big 5" Monster Tachs...no matter where you place it, it's going to look "ghetto" in terms of "it's not supposed to be there". Unless you fabricate a panel to mount the gauge(s) on, it looks silly no matter where you place it. Especially on a Monster Tach.

Drill a hole into your dash for the wires to run through. Then just mount the tach over the hole with screws.

IMO, just run the wiring through the dash vents, keep it clean. No drilling holes just in case you ever want to remove it. Mount it in front of the dash vent. Use some 2-way adhesive tape. Strong stuff. Run a small bead of silicon aswell.

So no screws, that sounds nice. I can just run it through the vent hmm have to check that out. Is that hard to do?

Yeah, do that. You're going to get out of your ricer stage and realize that the tach is useless.

I was thinking more of removing the face and using it as a cereal bowl. But that's just me.

Yeah dude, just mount it the way I said, whenever you want to remove it, you can just clean up the adhesive with some cleaner.
