catalytic converter question!!!!
I have a 12 year old cat. How would you know if its time for a change? Its suppose to smell bad and make some kind of sound? Mine doesnt, but Im wondering if having a old cat is restricting some power. I just swapped jdm h22 and was wondering if I should get a high flow cat or straight pipe, but I currently love the way my exhaust sounds and Im scared if i chagne it, its gonna sound like ****.
So what is the best thing to do? Just try it out and see what happens? importantly is alot of power being restricted from an old cat? If it is than i would change it, but if not than money could be better spent elsewhere? right?

if you aren't having any problems with your cat then leave it alone. they are designed to last a long time.
you won't really need the extra flow unless you have a heavily modified car. ( i.e engine internals, turbo)

that will defininitely alter the sound ( for the worse IMO) and it will be minimal gain, if any at all.

Yeha im not too excited to get a straight pipe and sound like ****. Im more concern if my cat is restricting some power because its so old.
My car has minimal mods. I/H/E and cam gears. I want to pick up a cheap vafc and tune my car but not sure if i should take care of my cat issues before tuning. Dont want to have to tune my car again if my cat craps out. What you guys think>? whats first?

id like to see a dyno plot showing tha tpulling or gutting a cat on a stock car makes noticeable gains.
the stock cats are pretty good as they are, the restriction at worst is going to be the nect going into and out of the cat. i had one then put in a test pipe, and the diff was teh soot on the bumper the raspy buzzy sound, and not much of a gain that i could feel....later wet back and put a carsound cat in and got the nice sound back without the soot and with being able to pass emissions here (TX).

dude its a big different i say because when i had my stock cat and exhaust on i could barely hit 120 and it was lagging on top end then when i put on my exhaust and straight pipe it was like night and day i could esaily hit 145 -140 with ease!! so i say do it but when smog comes later buy a v8 cat and youll passs

Then something was seriously wrong with your car. Has absolutely nothing to do with the cat or exhaust.
Gutting the cat or throwing in a test pipe in an engine that hasn't been opened up and modified will yeild MINIMAL gains, period. Anyone who has a test pipe and says their car sounds like stock doesn't have hearing as any 4 banger that is straight though is loud and obnoxious, definately will not sound like stock. If you only have I/H/E a test pipe will not yeild any defining gains to make it worth while to sound like crap and pollute 100x more than you would with a high flow cat.
