Default B16a's & catalytic convertors?

Well, this is the second time in about 2 years that my cat has messed up. The damn "honeycomb" in the cat just melts off and clogs my exhaust. I use aftermarket free flow cats too. What cat do you guys use with your B16's? Have you guys had any problems with yours? Maybe my B16 gets too hot for a cat?

i know it may seem like 'taking the easy way out' but you could always just replace it with a test pipe...then when smog comes around just bolt the cat back up...will a clogged cat pass emissions?

Yeah, my friend (the mechanic) was suggesting that, I think I may have to go that route.

Oh yeah it passed, with some extra incentives.

Yes. Have you replaced your O2 sensor(s)?

This change let me pass emissions without "extra incentives", and also helped increase gas mileage (about 3-4 mpg).

Also, what condition is your distributor in?

Haven't replaced them yet, but I haven't been throwing any codes to replace them. Dist is fine, no problems yet. Cap and rotor are new too.

My o2s were very bad and did not throw codes.. Changing them brought the nox from 550 down to 170... I had to check the resistance on the 02s for Cross counting.. Mine were just stuck at a flat number. Im noticing a huge improvement in gas mileage... Im getting like 40 in stock b16 w/ thermal exhaust

Im also noticing less black soot in the tail pipe... The o2s were very black when removed

I wish I would of changed 02s at the beginning of my swap. Im in the same boat, I have to do the cat to pass now. My guy will pass visual but wants it to be clean running

good luck..I went with the walkers off oxygensensors.com..I think it was $68 for two shipped

Only 2 things kill your cat... running lean or running rich.

Running lean is worse.
Running rich is typical of the JDM ECU's.

NoX, Co... blah blah blah... those are just readings the SMOG people get.... they aren't the conditions of the motor. It's the lean or rich condition that gives you those readings.

Anyway, if you want it absolutely right then you should look into getting your car tuned with a custom chip for your car. You could do this with a homemade wideband and a homebrew ECU tuner like turboedit or uberdata (program depends if you are OBD-0 or OBD-1). Burn your own roms and get your wideband readings corrected to an optimum stoitchiometric level and you should be good to go.

Look at the maintenance schedule for replacing the O2 sensors - it's very short for what a PITA they are to change, IMO.

I also did not throw any codes before deciding to replace both my O2 sensors.
