Default EGT probe tap and information.

I'm installing my EGT sensor in a couple of days. Now i've understood that its suposed to be #3 Cilinder since it gets the hottest, BUT, autometers probe instructions say if car is turbo mount after the turbo.

What should i do?

Also, what would be the normal ranges for EGT temp for my fuel ratio. When does temp go up (lean, rich). Honestlly i dont know how to read it well but i was told it was better than a A/F gauge and since my Turbo timer has that i decided to buy the EGT.

Thanx in advance

usually you'd tap the egt probe onto the header close to the cylinder head. since you're running a turbo, it makes sense to tap it after the turbo on the downpipe somewhere. when you run lean, it will get hotter. rich will run cooler.

It is best to tap about 3" from the head on the #3 runner, from what I understand. This is the hottest cylinder, and is the lead indicator if something is going wrong EGT-wise.

My manifold is a piece of **** also, i dont think i can get 3" away from the block. I will take a pic soon, it sucks real bad, but since it get the job done and i got it for 50 bucks i wont say anything

Edit: This is only in until i get to boost and i know it runs ok, after that i will get a better one

"Many people think that the leaner you go, the higher the EGT gets. This is also incorrect. Peak EGT occurs at stoichiometry- about 15 to 1 for our purposes. If you go richer than 15 to 1, EGT will drop and if you go leaner than 15 to 1 EGT will ALSO drop. It is VERY important to know which side of peak EGT you are on before making adjustments. It is safe to say that peak power will occur at an EGT somewhat colder than peak EGT." - https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=248965 - great post!

the reason why they recomend you mount it after the turbo on turbo cars is , if the probe happends to break , it doesnt go through the turbo and destroy it .

HELLA_JDM's had a good point about the probe breaking pre-turbo...I guess it would be a smart idea to mount if after the turbo...mine is mounted on the downpipe

It is a good idea to run both a wideband and and EGT.

Peak power will be 100 F rich of peak EGT.

I would tap it in the manifold because it will be accurate. After the manifold all your temperatures are going to be cooler.

So you would do damage before you noticed it.

i used to have mine on cyl 3 like 2 inches or so off the head. since i got the new manifold i decided not to drill into it so i mounted it in the dp now , right off the turbo. the egts are prob like 200 degrees off or so

Ok, i guess it will be #3 runner than. If anyone can draw a dot or something on the pic where you would tap it it would be nice.

Thanx for the help all

The oil feed is on the side, further down from the "cap".

That what you see capped is because the turbo was water cooled in its original car.

picture 10 is a close up of the way I tapped into my manifold on #3. We welded the bung from autometer so that we could just screw in the probe.
