Default Whirring noise-speed sensitive.

Hi, I just picked up my firs Teg over here in the UK yesterday.
Bought it from a UK Honda dealer.

I noticed a slight whirring noise coming from the car in virtually every gear and at any speed (more obvious around 40-50mph but thats because the engine seems quiter then anyway.
The dealer says that its because there is no soundproofing, and its the LSD whine. Apparently they all do it to a degree.
It doesnt stop when depressing the clutch/brake or accelerator. It just slowly reduces as the wheels slow down.

Its not that bad, but if I know its normal I wont worry. I do have a 1 year Honda warranty so I am not panicking too much.
Any help appreciated.

I don't mean to freak you out by any means but you shouldn't be hearing and whining noises from your LSD.

Here are a list of possible reasons for whirring in every gear

1) Input shaft bearing is going bad

2) Missing/gnawed/chipped gear tooth on either pinion gear or final drive ring gear
- Caused from hard down shift or missed shift I.E. 2 intended for 3 back into 1

3) Possible axle problem

4) Low tranny fluid/ Old tranny fluid.

Hope this helps. Good luck to you. I would make that dealership take it apart and look before it something catastrophic happens while it is under that warranty. Trannies are nto supposed to be whining like that.

It does whine to a certain degree as the shell is like a tin can w/o any sound deadening material. However, it shouldn't be really loud. Without actually hearing the sound, I would say your car is probably normal... (unless it's REALLY loud). One thing you can do, if you don't trust your dealer, is buy some Honda Manual Transmission Fluid (MTF) and change the tranny fluid and see if the sound quites down a bit. It only takes maybe 30minutes for the MTF change and you can never do too many MTF changes. G'luck.

it could also be a loose heatshield...

but yeah, bad input shaft bearing =

if you accelerate to around 5000 rpms in first gear, then immediately press the clutch pedal down all the way, if you listen as the rpms fall, do you hear something like a ice skate blade on ice? (ice skater complex)

regurgitating what you've read?
I think that its a wheel bearing problem
try taking off the axle nut, and hold the tire at 12 and 6, and see if there is play
if so ,then most likely wheel bearings

not input shaft, in my experience the sound goes away when you depress the clutch, and the sound wouldn't be speed dependant, but rpm dependant

Thanks for the help.

Yes. the sound does not go when the clutch is depressed.
Its not that loud. It sounds a bit like a washing machine on slow spin.
It sounds to me like it is the wheel bearing or the MTF.
The bearing ought to be under warranty though. Especially as I only got it two days ago.

I had the same whirring noise with one of the ITR trannies I'v run in the past. I thought it was a throwout bearing. It was not.

So, I kept driving and two weeks later my tranny locked up in gear while cuising @45mph or so. Car came to a screaching halt snapped an axle.

Once I got the tranny opened up the ring gear on the final drive had a few missing teeth and the pinion gear had zero teeth.

So am I "Reguritating" Yes I am reguritating my own experiences with transmissions. I also know that input shafft bearings can cause a similar "whirring" noise.

Have you ever had an input shaft bearing go bad? Have you ever experienced similar whirring noises and later discovered it was from your tranny? I am fine with people calling people out if it provoked, deserved, or needed, but your ignorance of the three prerequsites is funny. Do you even know me?

too me that would be my major concern... noise at all speed & in or out of gear. I could understand if the noise is only when it's in gear... but to hear it when it's out of gear is just plain strange.

i get a similar noise coming from mine however its quiet, and only happens at lower revs when the cars under a little bit of gas. i didnt think it sounded like a problem, however i havent ever had a ride in another ITR, so i dont know. i might go and nock on the door of the geezer round the corner and get a ride in his.
