OK THIS IS THE PROBLEM. I GET CODE 6 WITH A --PR3--- IN MY 1989 CRX HF WITH JDM B16. BUT IF I SWAP ECU WITH --PWO--- NO CODES. ALSO WHAT IS THE BETER ECU ---PR3--- OR ---PWO--.
Last time I checked I believe Code Six is Water Temp, The Two wire Sensor below the dizzy.
Ive heard the PR3 is better b/c there are more programs to chip it.
BOth suck *** due the the Speed Governor at 160km or 112mph.

remove the reverse lights from the reverse switch the code will disappear and it will drive normal. I assume you have a "MUGEN" chip. This problem only happens on your year car for some reason. I havent tried to figure it out as of yet. All i know is remove the reverse light switch and your check engine light will go away and you have HAPPY VTEC. Every HF i do a swap in has this problem 88-89 HF with a "mugen" program. Let me know if it works!

I am going to look into this when I get home, I have never run into this issue, and have done a large number of swaps over the years. Just to clarify, this problem only exists when:
1. Car is a 88 or 89 CRX hf
2. PR3 Ecu w/ "Mugen" chip (are you talking about the chip that has the large fuel hole around 6K RPM at part throttle?)
3. The reverse light switch is open

I hope you don't expect to do more than 112 mph on the highway, you aren't likely to see it at the drag strip and you surely won't see it running autocross.

HC you will, besides, chips can get rid of that pesky 180kmh limiter.

kyle i know its gay but its the truth its only happens with chipped "mugen" prgrams on 88-89 HF's for some strange reason. I know i should bust out the ETM and get down with it, (so i can give a rectified answer as to why it does this) but i just unplug the reverse lights and the code goes away car runs fine. I only know this cause it happened on colins car and we stumbled across it by accident after a 2 weeks of messing with it.
Well just have to sit tight and wait for turbo blue hatch to give it a go and see what happens but i can say with certainty that i should go away, maybe ill get around to picking up a ETM tonight and poking my noise around for the correct answer.

well ****. if i get bored at work tomorrow i may look the the electrical manuals as well to try to figure out if for some reason they tied them into the same circuit for power feed or some ****. doesn't make sense but makes it work i guess. i gotta figure out why my reverse lights don't work after i did my swap (almost 3 years now-i'm lazy).
ok this only happens on hf's with that ecu. i had it happen, code 6 coolant temp. unpluged the wireharness connectors from the trans, cleared the codes and BAM! it goes away. have no idea why. could care less. it works. if you wanna figure out why, get an etm, and be my guest. but why bother. first the motor doesnt belong in the car, and second neither does the ecu.
and now you know, and knowing is half the battle!
and you guys complaining about the ecu cutting out at 112mph. had that happen too, CHIP THE ECU, the problem goes away, and never comes back. hey thanks alot have a nice day.

the ecu dosent have a chip in it ill try the light thing. but will i have to keep them out
you dont have too, but dont put the car in reverse, or it will come on again.
like i said i had the same problem. cleared the codes, started the car put it in reverse, and bam the check engine light would come on. disconnected it and put it in reverse and no problem.

there you go hommie told you so. I am glad it worked out for, im onto the answer i will post it shortly. Remember 161822 help you fixed your problem and thanks kyle for being cool and sporty, EF's are my specialty
I know it sounded gay but it works and its only on amercian HF's i came across that by accident almost 5 years ago. Its one of those little secrets you dont let out, but i couldnt resist
thanks everyone 161822online.com skip a stone off your head
