Default Need to settle a bet...easy question...

I'm stuck at work and need to settle this easy question...

Does a '93 Civic EX coupe 5-speed have VTEC? The owner of the car swears up and down that she does not have VTEC but I'm pretty confident she does.

Thanks a lot!

Yes, it has the SOHC VTEC D16Z6 motor. It just might not say it on the valve cover.

Thanks for the quick responses guys.
I'm on the phone with her and she did verify that it's a D16Z6, but claims she cannot see the VTEC solinoid and has never heard VTEC and she also claims her friend that works at Honda said it does not have VTEC either??
FWIW she has a short ram intake and some kind of muffler so I assume VTEC should be realtively audible correct?
Thanks again.

the vtec solenoid is near the upper left side.
since it is a SOHC VTEC, you will not really hear it like a DOHC VTEC.
with just those mods, i dont think you will hear it.

Is the D16Z6 1.5 or 1.6, and when should VTEC kick in?

Cool, yeah she verified it was a Z6 and I was telling her where to look for the Vtec solenoid and I described it as best I could asn she claims there is not solenoid. Her Dad bought the car new so no funky non VTEC head swap was ever done, that I know for sure. I guess I'll go take a look at it after work and collect my $50
Thanks again.

Good question, I'll take her for a ride and point this out for added backup.

VTEC on the SOHC is more audible with just an intake. The exhaust kinda quiets it down a bit. But, you should still tell. It comes in at 4800 rpms and its characterized by have a sound like air being sucked in before 4800 rpms, and then it sounds like its not sucking as much. Listen carefully. And, yes, all 5th gen EXs had VTEC on the Z6. There will be the solenoid and depending on the year, VTEC on the valve cover. The solenoid has a nasty green color cap on it.
