Tapping sound... what could it be?
It's not the valves, already checked them several times in the past week or so and they are dead on. It's not the injectors, definatly too loud for them... but I have no idea what it could be.
This is on a B18C1 with a CTR Intake Cam. The motor just makes a pretty loud tapping/ticking sound and when you rev the motor, the sound goes with it. I've sat it side by side with my friends car who is running a far more built motor than I, and you can't even hear his motor idling because the tapping sound from my motor. I've heard many GSR motors and they have all been very quiet... but mine is unusually loud when it's hot or cold.
Any ideas what it could be? Car runs fine, no check engine lights but the ticking sound is annoying and if it's something fixable, then I'd like to fix it.
Thanks!

Nah definatly not rod knock. It's more of a high pitch, fast, ticking sound... as if they were the valves.
Guess I could do that long screw driver trick tommorow to try and pin point where the sound is coming from... but I was hoping it was just something common that someone might know a solution to.

Good luck!
There is a possibility that it could be a collapsed piston skirt. causing the piston the slap the cylinder wall. That does not happen very often but it does sound like loose valves.

Well I don't have a long screw driver but I went outside to pull my car in and popped the hood. If I put my ear next to the injectors I can hear those clicking as they should be... but I put my ear towards the front near the header/head and it's very loud from that area. Sounds like a clicking sound.
It could be anything. If the lash on the valves are all ok you could have a lazy valve spring. how many miles are on the car?

I would have to hear the sound my self. Hopefully there is somebody else out there that has experienced the same thing!
sorry I could not be more help!!

Well with bent valves wouldn't you get low compression numbers? I came out 220 across.
Thanks for the replies!

That symptom sounds like it could be an exhaust leak at the header gasket. Otherwise my next guess would be valve guides. My head makes a similar noise I believe to be valves guides and its driving me insane.

Yeah, I heard it might be an exhaust leak from a friend but wasn't sure if it made that type of clicking sound? It does sound as if it's coming directly from the header/head area though. Do I just replace the header gasket?

Well a friend of mine told me it's my rod bearings. Never heard how bad rod bearings sound but hopefully it's nothing too severe. I plan on rebuilding the bottom end in a month or two anyways so hopefully that is the problem.
The 1st gen B16's have lost motion assembly problems that will make a sudden tapping sound. It sounds like an unadjusted valve tap. I havent seen it on b18c's though but you never know. Something to look into. hth
big bump for this guy.
i am having the same problem.
just put a freshly rebuilt gsr in my car with a ctr and i am getting the same noise (i think)
i started the car to let it warm up for awhile to break in then after about 10 minutes it started, so i shut the car off. i readjusted the valves then started it and got the same thing. i dunno how a fresh rebuild could have rod knock, could it?

Ouch.
The noise I'm getting is a tapping sound... I'd say about 2 taps a second. It sounds like it's getting worse (not as high pitch as before) so I don't know what's going on. Friend says it's a rod bearing so I'm hoping it is since I'm going to rebuild my bottom end here shortly. Just looking for some JDM ITR pistons but can't find any.
