Default Ideal EGT readings.....when to worry::

I finally tapped my downpipe flange into the turbo for my EGT probe....

Funny, at first, I hooked it all up and it the needle didn't move after idling for 10 minutes. I was convinced the gauge was defective and prepared to send it back. But I guess you need to drive around for it to register on the gauge (lowest value is 300 degrees celcius)...

So now that it's working properly, what readings should I be watching for? I noticed that it varies quite a bit, the highest I've seen it is 700 degrees celcius. Regular driving yields figures closer to 400-500, and idle or really restrained driving brings the gauge down to about 200 degrees celcius.

The gauge "redlines" at 900 degrees celcius...at what temperature close to this should I start to back off if things are heating up too much?

Those readings sound about right. You should be fine. When Im on the Interstate crusing 80+ it gets as hot as 750deg. celcius and 800 under load.

I thought the EGT is supposed to be before the turbo? What good is it after?

Enlighten me.

The most accurate readings would be those closest to the head, so yea I'd think you'd want it well before the turbo too...

My EGT is probed into the downpipe/turbo too. My readings are 350-450 under idle, 500-600 under cruising ~35-50mph and 600-700 at ~70mph. When I floor it, the gauge never goes above 750 which I consider good.

I mentally add 50-100 degrees due to the distance from the block, so even at 850 under WOT I'm thinking I'm ok.

really you dont want to go much further than ARturbo when cruising around, depending ofcourse on your setup which may be more or less prone to detonate than his. putting a 3" exhaust will lower temps by lowering dwell time in exhaust and causing car to run a bit richer from lowered back pressure. 800 C is 1472F.
The melting point for pure aluminum is 660C - - of course your motor is an alloy this was just for contrast

Yup.. keep it under 900C.. don't want the block to start melting There's a reason the red area starts at 900C on the GReddy guage..

Well the spot that I picked, I have to admit, I stole from Dustin. It's a great spot for the EGT sensor. This area is actually before the exhaust gasses spin through the turbine, so I would consider it a very accurate reading.

I agree that the placement of the EGT in that picture is clean and sweet. Although I still think a far more accurate location would be about 1 inch from the head. I wished someone had enough money to test this out: put one EGT 1 inch from the head and also install another one like the one in the pic.

3" from the head is where most people(should) put it.
