I took mine off by removing the oil pan, then wedging the handle (wood) side of a hammer between the crankshaft, then proceeded to take the pulley off. you can use a breaker bar or air gun to remove the pulley with ease. the handle should be thick enough and it'll eliminate the pulley from turning.

I took a 3/8" by 2" by 2' bar. Drilled two holes that line up w/ the pulley.
2 - 2" long bolts/nuts
2' breaker bar w/impact socket (broke 2 craftsmans attempting this). Also do not use an extension
Jack up front end
Disconnect the motor mount to drop the motor down
Hold the bumper w/hands
Put foot on breaker bar
Pop the sucker off
I tried all kinds of ways to brace the pulley from turning. I bent/broke a couple of grade 8 bolts trying to get it off with extensions/ bracing the pulley with screwdrivers/crowbars, etc.

Hmm not sure. Everyone has just always said to put it in the higher gears when you do it.

I never had any luck having someone step on the brake pedal and putting it in gear.
This is what I usually do...take the fywheel cover off ...find a small bolt that will go into to flywheel holes, and bolt on one of the bolts for the flywheel cover on to the tranny without the cover.....then stick an open end wrench in between the 2 bolts and rotate the crank till they hit eachother...jack the car up and use a big *** breaker bar
good luck

My water pump shaft is failling, timing belt hitting the cover when the engine is on.
(wobble water pump gear). Planning to replace timing belt & water pump.
I need to get that sucker off too.
I have 1/2" torque wrench i could use for breaker bar and 17 mm socket.
but it keeps turning too...

don't use a torque wrench as a breaker bar. Get the right tool for the job.

I am the guy with the original post. I looked around for the tool which I thought after finding it was a bit expensive for what it was.
So..... I got a piece of 1/4" x 2" x 24" steel drilled a couple holes in it bolted two 4" bolts in it and it works great for holding the pulley when you are taking off the nut ( or putting it back in) also great when you are needing to remove the fly wheel.
If you like I could email you a picture ? of the tool.
Thanks , Bob
