Default wider wheels

i'm assuming that wider wheels mean more traction, but are there any disadvantages? is there anything i have to do to fit them on my rsx?

Disadvantages: heavier, rubbing depending on rim offset and how much lowered.

Just get rims with the right offset for your wide tires. What size do you plan to get?

eek. well, i'm aiming for a 1-1.25" gap between my fender and my tire. will an inch more of tire width make a lot of difference? is it even worth it?

I think 225 is pretty good. With a 1-1.25" gap, you probably only have to worry about rubbing on turns with super wide tires. Wide tires + tucking = probably not good. I don't think an inch will be a big problem. So, what size tire will you'll be running?

you can run a 8.5 inch wide rims with 40mm offset with no rubbing problems. If traction is what you want then you can fit some 235 tires on those rims above.

traction is good, but is it good for autox? what wheels and tires would be optimal for autox?

something light in weight like the SSR. depend on your class, i believe sts only allow you to use up 7.5 inch wide rims.

yeah 8.5 is no problem. I even heard some dude's running 9 inch wide rims. The trick is all in the offset, my volk ce28n is 8.5 with 40mm offset which is perfact for the rsx,235 on my rims doesn't rub.
