Default Removing & installing front oil seals & sprockets

94 Accord, Ex

VTEC

Hi guys. I could use some information about removing and installing the front oil seals and the sprockets:

I did a search in the archive and recent content under oil seals, sprockets, and TB, Water pump. Plenty of stuff there about the belts, water pump, and timing, but I was not able to find much of anything about removing or installing the sprockets and seals.

I only have a Haynes manual. I recently did a bunch of maintenance work on the car and then took it to an independent Honda mechanic (guy knows his stuff). No codes and everything else seems to be working ok.

All I have to work with for now is the Haynes manual, which is really crappy. I found an entire paragraph missing from the manual (think I posted about this). Anyway, I don't mind sending for a Helms, BUT I was going to just fix the car and sell it. This is my first Honda and I am very impressed at the quality of the materials of construction in this car, but the car was very poorly maintained, so I decided to fix it up to a point and then try to sell it to a very knowledgeable Honda enthusiast Do-it-yourselfer, and then apprise them of the situation and give them a good deal. So, I would like to avoid the expense of the Helms if possible.

With 160k , my tech friend said, considering how the car was not maintained by the former owner, you might as well fix it to a certain point and then sell it to a college kid for a song and a dance. I need to do the Water pump/TB job; and I want to do anything else I can while I am in that area of the engine (Btw, I did a TB and a water pump on another vehicle, so I am aware of the constant timing checking and rechecking issue). So, here is s list of the best questions I can come up with as of now using the infamous Haynes manual:

I am basing my questions on keeping everything at TDC at all times:

1. Is the 6 x 100 mm bolt/screw/drill that gets put into the bal shaft access hole, what must be in place to do remove both the front and rear Balance Sprockets, or just the rear one. If just the rear, how is the front removed without throwing off TDC?

Can I use a 6 mm x 100 mm Allen wrench? ... What stops this 6 mm x 100 mm from falling out - the pictures look like it is in place on an angle, as if it could slide right out.

2. Going by the written text in Haynes, I counted four sprockets - Crank, Cam, Balance front, and Balance rear. B U T going by the pictures in Haynes, I see a "fifth sprocket," above the tensioner and toward the firewall (what is this [sprocket] thingamajig no one is talking about ? ... Does it have an oil seal behind it ? )

3. This website (http://www.cybertrails.com/~puf/Hond...meBalNote.html) mentions using a 2.49 drill bit, a .249 drill bit, and a .0249 drill bit. (which measurement is correct?) All it takes is one sloppy editing job to cause problems (no flaming intended)

4. Can I get a list of all the seals I can replace on the front of the engine while doing a TB job? Let's see, there's crank, cam, bal shaft front - are there others? ... Is there a seal behind the top gear that is underneath the rear balancer shaft gear case, or just the large O-ring?

5. Can I get the internal and external diameters of all the seals I can replace - crank, cam, bal shaft front, rear bal shaft - others? That 5th sprocket?

OR,

can I get a size of the sockets (SAE or Metric) I will need to put the seals in place.

6. This website (http://www.cybertrails.com/~puf/Hond...meBalNote.html), mentions using a bolt/screw 6 mm X 1 mm pitch x 5/8 inches long and to insert it into an access hole somewhere near the front bal shaft in order to do work in that area. Oddly, well actually I'm not at all surprised that HAYNES again says nothing about this. In fact, looking at the Haynes pictures I can't even detect any access hole. Haynes says the put a screwdriver or bolt thru the rear of the sprocket, page 2C-14, pic 13.1 So, what is this all about. Why two versions or is this stuff about two different things?

7. I keep reading about "two" tensioners: a TB and a Bal shaft. I thought there was only one tensioner for both parts, AND yet I am getting two different part numbers:

Balance Shaft Tensioner, A5027-45162

Timing Belt Tensioner, A5030-62756

For now I'm out of questions. If there are any I forgot please let me know what to start looking into. I am preparing a tool and parts list.

thank you,
diyer

Gee, doesn't anyone know these answers?

Hasn't anyone taken the sprockets off and done ALL the seals.

Sounds to me like you and I are in the same boat. Nobody here knows whats going on. Most people here are all about cosmetic and blingbling stuff. No real mechanical answers can be found. Here's mine:

diyer here.

I just read your dilemma too. Quite frankly, I think there are people here that can answer the question but for some reason are not - could be various reasons. The ones who can might not have read our post. It is real easy to get frustrated about that. I think there are definitely knowing guys here that have done this "EVERY-SEAL-AND-EVERY-SPROCKET", A N D know all the tricks and tips we need to know. Perhaps it is too hard to articulate. I think it is also possible that the Helms manual I might address all of this. But in my case I couldn't see getting that manual just for this one job. Everything else I am doing to "this" Accord is covered in Haynes, at least enough that I can decipher my way thru their many typos, etc., and get the job done.

Hey you have my permission to re-ask the questions and include mine if you want. I'm going to read yours again - I may be able to answer some of it.

thanks for the reply,
diyer

I read the forum rules and tips and help FAQS and it recommends being vehicle and question specific, and buddy I certainly couldn't have been anymore specific than I was. I was only talking about the seals and sprockets. If I were to make a post for every seal and every sprocket I would be typing for days on end and asking numerous redundant questions. Point is that my questions were very specifically bulls-eyed and detailed for any tech to easily answer. Why don't you tell me all about removing the cam sprocket and installing the seals without losing TDC and without damaging ANYTHING in the process!?

secondly, if ur ind. honda mechanic, and he cant help you, then ur probably not gonan be able to find much help anywhere........just my $.02</TD></TR></TABLE>

Where did I say that any independent Honda mechanic couldn't help me? My friend doesn't have the time to be on the tele with me all day. He knows I did TB's and water pump jobs before. BUT that has nothing to do with sprocket removal or seal installation questions; hence, the reason for this board.

thanks for the reply - have a nice day.
